Amfitriti is an ideal choice for a couple seeking a romantic break in an attractive private setting. An immensely clever design has seen the creation of an open space that merges the living, dining and kitchen areas with the sleeping area where a queen-size bed sits next to an inviting Jacuzzi bath, a private cloakroom alongside. The décor of both vivid and pastel shades harmonises perfectly with the property’s natural stone walls and is a wonderful example of how traditional architecture can be given a thoughtful, contemporary feel.
Perhaps the best thing about the south west of Crete is that it is considered one of the finest spots on this wonderfully sunny island in which to completely and utterly relax: unwind on the beach, enjoy a good book by the pool or, if some gentle activity is desired, spend a lazy afternoon swimming, windsurfing or snorkelling over the coral reef. Our own childhood memories flooded back as we explored the rock pools and crevices, in front of the villa, whilst wandering along the shore. It’s great to get out and explore this wild, rugged side of Crete, where scattered hamlets are few and far between and nature stuns the visitor with its dramatic scenery. Famous for its dazzling white sand and beautiful aquamarine sea, the shallow waters of Elafonissi Lagoon are considered to be amongst the warmest in all of Crete and the area has now been given official EU protection for its abundant natural beauty. Coral lends the main sandbar an attractive pinkish tinge and connects the beach to a little islet – seen from the air this formation resembles an atoll in the Maldives. Encouraging a post-lunch snooze on the beach and then a languid swim to wake up are a couple of handy tavernas on the edge of the sand dunes serving traditional local dishes and chilled wine or beer. Chania is the main town in the north, boasting a wonderful harbour front with plenty of shops and restaurants, or visit the stunning Gorge of Topolia which is also an annual stopover location for many bird species on their migration to and from Africa.
