The Algarve has many hidden corners of peace and tranquillity, amongst which the exclusive enclave of Val d'el Rey is certainly one of the most sought after. Close to the coast, some of the region’s best sandy beaches and the excellent amenities of Carvoeiro, this fine country home sits in over 8,000m² of land, private, serene and with no near neighbours. Dotted around this desirable area are properties of similarly grand stature, although you would never know as most, in common with Casa do Rey, guard their privacy carefully behind gates, high walls, mature foliage and long driveways that sweep up through landscaped grounds.
Both internally and externally, Casa do Rey is one of the prettiest Algarvean houses we have found. Silently extending an irresistible invitation to linger in the summer sunshine, the gorgeous pool area has an extensive choice of open and shaded terraces from where the view out over the valley encompasses a picturesque undulating landscape of two distinct areas.
Immediately adjacent to the house, the garden comprises rolling lawns, colourful rockeries of oleander and bougainvillea plus a motley assortment of fig, olive, pomegranate and mango trees; further away the land transforms into an untamed, natural landscape of wild scrub, unkempt grasses and indigenous shrubs fringed by mature pines.
Tasteful furnishings adorn the spacious interior where the owner has determinedly sourced only local artisans and craftsmen for the design and construction of many of the most substantial pieces. Gathered on his worldwide travels, various items of memorabilia include a noteworthy collection of artwork and an attractive set of hardwood, director-style dining chairs from Kenya. A nautical theme pervades but never overpowers the house décor.
Regularly appearing in the top ten list of the most picturesque, family-friendly beaches on The Algarve, Benagil (5km) and Praia da Marinha (6km) are two beautiful sandy coves. All amenities as well as a vast choice of restaurants specialising in fresh fish (delicious grilled over hot coals or baked in a casing of rock salt) can be found in both Lagoa (3.5km) and Carvoeiro (6km) from where boat trips take visitors to quiet coves for snorkelling and a close up view of the famous rock formations at Algor Seco.
