We were instantly smitten by this sympathetically restored olive oil mill, built of traditional stone and dating back to 1895. Gaia is fringed by tastefully preserved ruins and verdant forests in a quintessentially rural setting yet at the same time is only 500m from village amenities, 2.5km from the beach and 4km from the many excellent restaurants of Fiscardo harbour.

Looking to establish a provenance for years to come and determined to retain the rustic charm and authenticity inherent in such a property Georgia, the owner, has paid meticulous attention to detail in all aspects of Gaia’s renovation. Her tireless efforts liaising with the architect and individual craftsmen has imbued the house with great charm and warmth plus, by cleverly purchasing the land around the property, a select location has been ensured.

Stepping inside, the rafters of the high ceilings in the large open plan living space create a cool, relaxing environment perfectly complementing the stylish, rustic décor. Open the French windows that lead onto the raised terrace and garden, relax on the comfortable sofas and enjoy mesmerizing views of the glittering Ionian Sea immediately ahead. The pretty Provençal-style double bedroom is decorated in an appealing blend of beige and mauve, and the twin bedroom on the first floor sits snugly under the eaves.

Externally, pistachio-coloured shutters, the pointed roof and original thick stone walls are all indicative of the mill’s origins. An ancient wall on one side outlines the original grounds and guarding the pool, a tall majestic olive tree rises above the pretty stone paved terrace and a hammock tucked away in one corner simply invites indolence. The lovely outdoor dining terrace has been carefully positioned to ensure full advantage is taken of those panoramic sea views.

Mini-markets and local tavernas at Maganos village are just 600m away and Dafnoudi, a secluded pebble beach with an enticing cave at the bottom of a steep natural valley is only 2.5km. Excellent for snorkelling, the translucent waters of Emblisi Beach are 4km and Agia Jerusalem with a charming waterside taverna is 7km.

Due to the wooded environs barbecues are not permitted
