Just off a picturesque country lane running through wooded hillsides, this renovated stone farmhouse provides an ideal holiday retreat for a small party, offering comfort and practicality and striking just the right balance between seclusion and convenience.
The spacious open plan living area is without doubt the convivial hub of the house, with an informal décor adding splashes of colour to complement the traditional backdrop of exposed stone, terracotta tiles and pine beams. The compact kitchen is to one side, which in turn leads out towards the covered dining terrace where al fresco meals can be enjoyed gazing out across the valley. Built in the eaves the bedrooms are comfortably furnished and well proportioned and benefit from their own en suite bath or shower facilities.
To the rear of the house, the fenced pool sits on raised ground beside a lawned area with plenty of space for children to run around and play. The milieu is predominantly rural and semi-agricultural, as the owners of La Ferme des Cigales also run a small organic fruit and veg farm on the surrounding land (although no machinery is evident during the summer months). You will soon discover that the Agen region is characterised by swathes of plum orchards – don’t miss out on sampling the delicious chocolate-covered Pruneaux d’Agen during your stay!
Local cafés and restaurants and a bakery can be found in the medieval walled village of Penne d’Agenais (7km) with a wider selection of shops in Villeneuve-sur-Lot (15km), which as its name suggests sits on the banks of the river Lot. A little further afield, Agen (24km) has an atmospheric historic centre with plenty of pavement terraces from which to watch the world go by as well as a pedestrianised boulevard lined with boutiques.
