Approaching Aloni for the first time, it seems hidden away above the traditional stone walls that enclose the pretty surrounding garden. A splendid semi-circular pool reflects the history of the original site as a thresher’s circle (as does the Greek name) and the wonderful views vie with an intimate traditional interior for a truly lasting first impression. Comfortable outside terrace furniture ensure that many hours are spent admiring the views of Skala, the countryside and the vivid blue of the Ionian Sea. To one side, a shaded terrace houses the barbecue for al fresco meals and evenings spent listening to the cicadas and goats’ bells in the distance.

Tucked away above Katelios Valley, this attractive house boasts a marvellous location with eye catching views of the tiny harbour and the stretch of sandy beach that hugs the coastline. The blueness of the Ionian Sea dazzles and in the distance Mounda Beach can also be seen.

Katelios is one of the most delightful villages in Kefalonia. The fresh seafood dishes served in the beachside tavernas (1km) are renowned as being amongst the best on the island and it is all too easy for a leisurely lunch to last long into the afternoon. The gently sloping sandy beach (1km) is unspoilt and lapped by clear shallow water that is great for snorkelling and especially popular with young families while the easy layout of the harbour front is perfect for an evening promenade.

This jewel of a property sits in a prime spot; overlooking the splendid Skala valley where verdant hills roll down to the virtually endless sandy beach and bustling seaside town of the same name. On the south west of the headland that juts into the sea is Mounda Beach (1.8km), a unique and protected stretch of unspoilt sandy coastline renowned as a centuries-old nesting site for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle.

As we stood by the poolside of Eido Vello and looked out across the wonderful panoramic vista of gently undulating countryside and lush woodland that stretched out ahead of us, we felt that we were in the very heart of rural Galicia. In the distance however, the blue sea shimmered invitingly on the horizon and reminded us that we were in fact only 13km from the Caribbean-like sandy beaches of the region’s stunning southernmost coastline.
