Today you\u2019ll find ancient monasteries, independent earldoms, castles, Romanesque and Gothic churches and a whole lot more.<\/p>\n<p>We recommend you hire yourself a car and follow the tour below. Give yourself a good day and be sure to stop at one of the many authentic tapas bars for lunch:<\/p>\n<h2>Where to start&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>Leave Girona and take the C-66 towards La Bisbal d&#8217;Empord\u00e0. When you come to ordils turn off along the GIV-6701. You\u2019ll pass the beautiful village of Sant Mart\u00ed Vell which has a late Gothic spire \u2013 Madremanya. Also look out for Monells and Cru\u00eflles. Get back onto the C-66 and go to La Bisbal and Cor\u00e7\u00e0. At La Bisbal you\u2019ll discover a fantastic castle in the centre of the tow. Also, look out for the Main Square and old Jewish quarter, which are also well worth a look. If you get time also be sure to visit the three surrounding villages of Monells, Cru\u00eflles and Cor\u00e7\u00e0 as they are also just as quaintWhen you get to Monells look out for the porticoed square, which is stunning. Whatever you do, make sure you check out 11th-12th-century Romanesque donjon in Cru\u00eflles.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1091\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1091\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vintagetravel.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Monestir_de_Sant_Miquel_de_Cruilles.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1091\" title=\"Monestir_de_Sant_Miquel_de_Cru\u00eflles\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vintagetravel.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Monestir_de_Sant_Miquel_de_Cruilles.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monestir de Sant Miquel de Cru\u00eflles<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>From La Bisbal re join the C-66 towards Palafrugell, turning off after a short distance onto the GI-644 towards Peratallada. When you arrive at Peratallada you\u2019ll discover a very typically (for the area) medieval fortified village. Turn back along the same road and drive on to Ullastret, well known for the nearby Iberian settlement. Also be sure to check out the villages of Palau-sator, Sant Juli\u00e0 and Sant Feliu de Boada, even if you just to drive through them \u2013 well worth a look. It will probably be almost lunch time by now so we recommend you head to Pals, which has to be one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Catalonia. Here you\u2019ll discover a delightful long beach where you can walk off a fantastic meal before the next step of the journey.<\/p>\n<p>Now join the C-31 and head for the market town of Torroella de Montgr\u00ed. Here you will discover some impressive remains of medieval ramparts and defence towers. If you\u2019re lucky you may catch part of the grand international music festival held here every summer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1092\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1092\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vintagetravel.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Torroella-de-Montgri.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1092\" title=\"Torroella de Montgr\u00ed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vintagetravel.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Torroella-de-Montgri.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1092\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Torroella de Montgr\u00ed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then take the C-31 towards Verges. Just after leaving Torroella you\u2019ll \u00a0find the medieval village of Ull\u00e0 with an impressive 18th-century church. The next stop is Bellcaire d\u2019Empord\u00e0 with its 13th-century castle and Romanesque church of Sant Joan \u2013 be sure to get out the car and explore here.<\/p>\n<p>Your next stop is along the C-260 to Castell\u00f3 d\u2019Emp\u00faries. There are loads of things worth looking at here however, the best part has to be the Castell\u00f3 d&#8217;Emp\u00faries. This is the huge 13th-century Gothic church of Santa Maria.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1093\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1093\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vintagetravel.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Castello-dEmpuries.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1093 size-medium\" title=\"Castell\u00f3 d'Emp\u00faries\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vintagetravel.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Castello-dEmpuries-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1093\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Castell\u00f3 d&#8217;Emp\u00faries<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>And uf you\u2019ve still got enough room on your camera&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>Head along the C-252 to Peralada, a town with a vast historic centre that is definitely worth a peek.
