Paxos is the smallest of the Ionian Islands. Only accessible by boat, Paxos offers tranquillity, peace and seclusion, which is way off Greece\u2019s beaten track.<\/p>\n

With pretty bays, beautiful harbours and translucent water, Paxos\u2019s periphery really does take some beating in terms of untouched seaside splendour.<\/p>\n

1- Paxos history
\nAccording to legend, Paxos was formed when Poseidon, one of the 12 Olympian deities in Greek mythology, struck Corfu with his trident and caused the most southern tip of the island to become dislodged and break away, henceforth Paxos was born.
\nThe piece of land then became Poseidon\u2019s secluded love nest where he took his mistress Amphytrite, without his wife knowing.<\/p>\n

2- Population
\nThis tiny island is ten kilometres in length and four kilometres wide and has a population of approximately 2,500.<\/p>\n

3- Beaches
\nThere are a total of 21 beaches on Paxos, which offer a mix of sand and pebbles.<\/p>\n

4- Paxos\u2019 capital
\nThe town of Gaios is the capital of Paxos. Although labelling Gaios as a town is dubious, given its small size and sparse population. Nonetheless, chic boutiques, atmospheric bars and tavernas, an inspiring mix of British and Venetian heritage and a yacht-immersed harbour, ensure Gaios is a compelling town to visit.<\/p>\n

5- Donkeys
\nAs time has seemingly stood still on this captivating island it is not unusual to still see donkeys working on Paxos. According to legend, when a lady on Paxos becomes a widow and wears only black it is in celebration of being able to put the donkey outside of the house instead of inside as the men insist.<\/p>\n
