On the south side of the island of Crete is a wonderful expanse of beach that lies at the foot of the Siderotas Mountains. Known as Triopetra Beach this beautiful stretch of sand is fringed by olive groves. Even the drive to Triopetra is beautiful, as you pass through rustic landscape and catch glimpses of the sea and the Paxamidia Islands. Here are just several reasons to visit Crete\u2019s beautiful Triopetra Beach.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Peace and Quiet<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you crave peace and quiet and not having to fight for a sun bed on a crowded beach, then this place is for you. The beaches are so big that there is room for everyone, and more to the point, the area has not been over modernised. There are a few taverns and accommodation is scattered around but Triopetra Beach certainly clings to retaining a tranquil identity.<\/p>\n

Places to explore<\/strong><\/p>\n

This area consists of two large beaches, separated by a small peninsula. At the edge three majestic rocks rise up, hence the name Triopetra – \u201cThree Rocks\u201d.<\/p>\n

Between the beaches of Triopetra and Agios Pavlos there are several smaller coves with lovely sandy beaches. The first beach, known as small Triopetra (or Koumado), is basically a sandy and rocky bay, a river empties through it, separating the beach from the fantastically wonderful St. Paul Sandhills.<\/p>\n

The main beach, West Triopetra (or Chatzi), is located to the west of the rocks. It has beautiful coarse sand and crystal clear water and a stunning cave. West Triopetra is famous for its fantastic sunsets. However it does tend to be a bit windier than the other beach.<\/p>\n

No Commercialism<\/strong><\/p>\n

The beach of Triopetra can be reached via the road from Rethymno that leads to Spili. This is a good place for a stop to have a cup of coffee or something to eat. But if you are intending to stay for a long time in Triopetra, and will be providing for yourself, you do need to take supplies with you, get some shopping in Spili as the area does not pander to the tourist!<\/p>\n
