The Kalkan area is one of the most beautiful parts of Turkey\u2019s Lycian Turquoise coastline. The Lycian coast is lush, densely-forested and dramatically mountainous. The geography divides the land into river valleys, lakes, forests and rocky coastal plains, and due to the mountains rising to heights of over 10,000 feet, is still predominantly unspoilt. For centuries it was difficult to access this part of the country. Most contact came via the sea, especially from Greece, with trade in wine, charcoal cotton and grain. With ruins of two dozen cities in this province, a strong, atmospheric link with its past resonates through this stunning region of Turkey.<\/p>\n

\"Kalkan\"<\/p>\n

There are many beautiful bays, beaches, small islands and sea caves on the Kalkan Coast. One in particular is the \u201cBlue Cave\u201d, which is almost in near darkness except for the incredible brilliant phosphorescent-blue caused by sunlight shining through the surface of the water. In fact, the Kalkan Coast has some of the very best beaches in southwest Turkey.<\/p>\n

The Saklikent (Hidden City) Gorge is the longest and deepest in all of Turkey.\u00a0 It is a spectacular place, with walls soaring high above. After April when the snow from the Taurus Mountains has melted, you can explore 4 kilometres of the gorge.<\/p>\n

The ancient town of Kalkan remains an enchanting place, a delightful and unspoilt retreat of historic architecture, ancient history and warm Turkish hospitality. It is a peaceful resort and fishing town, untouched by mass tourism. Many of Kalkan\u2019s buildings in its narrow streets that wind up from the sea are listed.\u00a0There is a strong leaning towards Ottoman Greek architecture in the beautiful flower covered houses.<\/p>\n

Kalkan is reported to have over a hundred restaurants, including numerous roof terrace establishments with wonderful view of the town, sea, and the stars at night. Despite their proliferation, they blend so well and do not diminish the atmosphere of the place.<\/p>\n
