It\u2019s stooped in history and a fantastic place to visit if you\u2019re looking to absorb yourself in culture on your travels. Today, the Old Fort remains one of the Islands best attractions and when you visit it\u2019s easy to see why.<\/p>\n<p>Originally a Byzantine castle, it was rebuilt by the Venetians in its first phase (1400-1500) \u2013 the original Byzantine walls were strengthened and the canal opened (Contra-Fossa), which also created the artificial island accessed by a movable bridge.<\/p>\n<p>The second stint of development happened between the16th-18th cent.
