This ancient\ntowns remains of the most important centres of culture, art and history on the\nisland and is the perfect place to become acquainted with authentic Sicilian\nlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/4-710x473.jpg\" alt=\"Exploring the historic town of Cefalu in Sicily\" class=\"wp-image-8534\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Pinched between the cobalt water of the Tyrrhenian Sea and a\nhuge distinct rock, Cefalu was originally built as a fishing port but has been\ngradually extended to become a larger town. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sandy beach at the foot of the town is attractive,\nflanked by tall medieval houses. The town\u2019s historical centre can be found on\nthe eastern side of the beach, where ancient streets wind from a picturesque\nsquare, lined with palm trees, popular restaurants and laidback cafes, to the\nharbour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A magnificent cathedral looks down on the old town and\nharbour, which is hailed as one of the most beautiful churches in Sicily. Known\nas Cefalu Cathedral, this spectacular, double-towered cathedral boasts a\nstunning fa\u00e7ade and an equally inspiring interior adorned in Byzantine mosaics.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as the cathedral, there is a wealth of other ancient\nsites and landmarks in Cefalu, including the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century Madonna\ndella Catena, the baroque-style Church of Santo Stefano and the unmissable\nChurch of Saint Trinity, which vaunts an elaborate fa\u00e7ade decorated in floral\nmotifs and heads of angels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best views of Cefalu and the beautiful coastline that stretches from this historic seaside town, can be found by climbing La Rocca, the craggy rock that towers over the town. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La Rocca was once the location of a Norman castle, built in 1061.
