Go to the Beach
The stunning coves at Roche are just 15 mins away by car. Young families should head for the sandy beaches at La Barrosa with play areas, plenty of facilities and a lovely promenade with a choice of restaurants and car parks along it.
Carthusian Horse Centre.
Visit this stud farm on the outskirts of Jerez, the most important reserve of Carthusian horses in the world. See over 200 horses grazing in natural surroundings, mares and foals.
Sample Vejer's fabulous restaurants
In recent years a number of fantastic restaurants have popped up in Vejer. All open for a leisurely lunch or romantic evening meal. Sample traditional tapas such as tortilla or jamon or fried sea anemone, cuttlefish meatballs and the famous fresh red tuna (seasonal). There is also a great Moroccan restaurant, French cuisine, numerous Italian restaurants and quirky wine bars.
Jerez de la Frontera.
The home of flamenco, sherry, brandy and horses. Visit this elegant city where churches and palaces nest between orange trees. An impressive bull ring, boutique shops and traditional tapas bars.
Visit Tarifa at the far tip of Andalucía.
See the kite surfers (you could have a go yourself!), explore the castle and the old town and marvel at the views of Morocco. Africa is just 11 miles away across the Straits of Gibraltar.
Explore Medina Sidonia & the Acampo Abierto
See the Santa Maria church and explore the old town that was once largely owned by the wealthiest family of Spain. At 11am in summer months there is a display at one of Alvaro Domecq's country estates, go and watch how they breed and herd the working horses and fighting bulls. Not to be missed.
Be amazed by the scale of these largely unheard of Roman remains. A whole Roman city nestling at the foot of a giant sand dune on the Atlantic Coast. Afterwards enjoy fresh fish or paella in one of the hippy beach bars.
Royal Equestian School
This spectacular show is at the Fundacion Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre in Jerez (Royal Spanish Andalucian horse school) and is well worth a visit. Easiest to book tickets in advance via internet and pick up on the day. Impressive show even if you are not a horsey person.
The thing to do for romantics and foodies alike. Some of the best fish restaurants can be found right on the coast, in particular Conil. Enjoy a local catch whilst watching the sunset over the Atlantic ocean.
Visit Cape Trafalgar and Lighthouse
Just 5 miles off shore from the headland was fought the famous naval battle in 1805 and you can begin to imagine the scene at this atmospheric and beautiful spot.
Visit the oldest city (3,000 years) in Europe and marvel at its architecture which has not been touched for over 200 years. Do a guided bus or walking tour, passing the various museums, Genoves Park, the famous cathedral with its golden dome, as well as La Caleta beach, the castle and the bastions.
Go horse riding
from an hour to a whole day. Made to measure outings and treks on the beach or through the pine forests.
Try whale and dolphin watching
In Tarifa or La Linea you can take a boat out into the straits and watch these amazing creatures.
Discover its cathedral and the exquisite Moorish palace or Alcazar . You can even take a city bus tour - it's a great way to see the sights
Visit Doñana National Park
Take a boat from Sanlucar and see its southern edges or drive to Matalascanas and do the full tour in a 4wheeldrive desert bus! - this is Europe's largest birdlife reserve and quite unique.
Take a drive and explore
The stunning scenery within easy reach - it's a beautiful mountain drive via Alcala, Ubrique, Grazelama and El Bosque.
Visit Gibraltar for a day
Definitely not Spain and not Britain either. A good day trip - the best bit is the rock itself so take a cable car ride or taxi to the top and visit the Barbary apes and St Michael's caves.
Take the kids to Aquasherry Water Park outside Jerez.
Make the children the excuse and have a great time yourself on the slides and plumes.
Visit Conil market
All the towns in the area have a weekly outdoor market, these are a great way to enjoy a typical Spanish atmosphere and stock up on a few unusual souvenirs to take home. Conil market is every Friday morning. Follow with a leisurely coffee break at one of the cafe bars.
Some great courses in the area and all available to non-members. The nearest course is El Campano just down the road, there are 4 further courses in Novo Sancti Petri near Chiclana. Montenmedio Golf & Country Club is a 25min drive.
When you want a break from the sun why not take the children to Jerez Zoo. Well laid out, very clean and excellent value for money.
