Located just a 3 minute drive from Topsham town centre, Darts Farm provides a fantastic array of amenities, such as shopping outlets, restaurants and cafes, outdoor activities, bike hire facilities, outdoor activities and a spa. The farm also organises specific events and weekends tailored to suit different interests, such as a Cheese, Chutney and Cider weekend, a Beef Butchery masterclass, and an Autumn Photography Course. All produce sold at Darts Farm is provided by local farmers, and the fruit and vegetables on offer are all grown on site at the farm – they even run a pick-your-own scheme! It is also possible to choose from a selection of bikes for hire, such as electric bikes, which you can take out onto the trail that runs along the local estuary. There is also plenty for children to discover and explore, such as the animal corner where youngsters can meet the pigs, cows and calves, and even the resident alpacas in the summer time.
Surprisingly similar to a wine cellar one may find in Italy or France, Topsham wine cellar can offer a selection of vintage Devonshire wines as well as some international wines to a group of up to 45 people, under a vaulted warehouse next to the river near Topsham Quay. The resident chef, Raphael Barras, can also prepare a range of light meals including sharing boards of local tapas, for example cheeses, meats, smoked trout and patés. A tour of the vineyard can also be arranged prior to the wine tasting.
The Cathedral is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the country, and has been located at its present site in the centre of the city for over 1000 years. The grandeur of the cathedral and the beauty of the interior architecture will take your breath away, and has the longest unbroken Gothic vaulted ceiling in the world. There is also a souvenir shop on site, which offer postcards, prints, guidebooks and CDs of the cathedral choir, as well as a café with a menu serving breakfasts and handmade cakes, light lunches and a wonderful afternoon tea. On Thursday evenings the café also offers a tapas menu with Spanish inspired dishes from £2.50 per dish.
Powderham Castle sits within extensive, stunning grounds, which can be explored by guided tour or simply by taking a relaxed stroll around the estate yourself. There is a deer safari park, an American Woodland Garden, Rose Garden and Chapel and much more, including refreshments and a gift shop. The house is 600 years old, so is steeped in history, and proves to be a fascinating tour hearing about the intriguing stories related to each of the grand rooms told by the knowledgeable guides.
A wonderful location for a sunny day, Exeter Quay is a beautiful spot to grab a spot of lunch, sit and enjoy the views with an ice cream, or even rent a canoe and sail along the river. There are plenty of restaurants and pubs in the area, so you won’t be stuck for choice when it comes to choosing where to eat, as well as many individual and independent shops to explore. It is possible to hire bikes and boats at the Quayside, and cycle the length of the Quay and beyond, or sail along the river yourself, enjoying the views looking back onto the Quayside.
Topsham Outdoor Swimming Pool
Take a dip in Topsham's open air heated swimming pool, located in the heart of the town and open from April to September.
Topsham Quay Antiques Centre
When in Topsham, one must visit the Quay Antique Centre located on the estuary - even if you're not a fan of antiques. The riverside warehouse is home to three floors of antique, vintage and retro items with over 65 antique dealers, hours can be spent gazing over the many eclectic items. The antique centre is often seen on BBC's Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Show.
Bicton Park Botanical Gardens
Just a 20 minute drive from Topsham, the beautifully tended gardens of Bicton Park are a wonderful location to spend the day or even just a few hours perusing the plants and grounds. Enjoyed by all members of the family, even the dogs, the park has plenty to offer, such as a nature trail, mini golf, indoor and outdoor children’s play areas and much more. There is also a large gift shop offering an array of home and garden products, gift certificates and children’s toys.
Make the most of Topsham's train station and jump on a train to Exmouth sea front for a day spent on the beach with your bucket and spade. The 15 minute journey, takes you along the scenic Exe estuary where Royal Marines can be spotted training for the gruelling mud run.
Ashcombe Adventure Centre
Enjoy a day out at Ashcombe and take part in many activities including archery, zip slides, novice shooting, assault courses, paintballing, team challenges and raft building.
This atmospheric castle is great to visit and fun for children too. The castle was built in 1106 but has had many makeovers since this. There is much to see and do at this attraction such as trying on English Civil War armour, admiring architecture, learning the history of the castle, spending time in the walled gardens and looking at the exhibitions of gold and silver mining in Devon.
World of Country Life
A family owned attraction, World of Country Life offers a great day out come rain or shine. Visitors can enjoy a mix of museums, animals, play areas and entertainment. There are also many events which take place throughout the year such as The Amazing Vintage Classic Car Rally, Halloween Half Term Week Spooktacular and Visit Santa- the Victorian Christmas Experience.
Devon Railway Centre
A popular place for visitors to the area, the Railway centre offers a unique experience. The railways give unlimited train rides around the centre. Visitors can also explore the under-cover model railway exhibition and discover the Edwardian Model Village and Model Funfair. Visitors can also drive their own car or train.
