Take the pretty road from El Gastor to another historic white village: Setenil. Here you will find houses built into the overhanging rock, ancient buildings, and wonderful views. Setenil also has several good bars and restaurants.


Seek out local products
Seek out local products
Visit a working mill to buy olive oil, and look out for soap and other cosmetic items which are also made from this wonderful product. Buy a 'barra' from the bakery. Pop into a bodega to stock up on locally produced wine, and a selection of cheeses from the local farms. Markets sell fresh fruit, veg, olives and pickles. Take them home for a feast, or enjoy a ready-made picnic!


See a master at work
The small town of Algodonales is home to guitar-maker Valeriano Bernal. Visit his workshop and see a true master at work. His clients include many famous musicians, but anybody can order one of his masterpieces. Now, there's a souvenir with a difference!


Have a day at the beach

The glorious beaches of the Costa de la Luz can be reached in an hour and a half. Treat yourself to a day on the golden sand, swimming in the clear aquamarine waters of the Atlantic, and a seafood lunch in a 'chiringuito' beach restaurant, accompanied by a crisp local white wine. Then plenty of time for a seaside siesta before returning to the peace and quiet of Llanama and your own swimming pool.


Take to the air
The town of Algodonales, just a few kilometres away, is the local centre for hang gliding and other types of air sports. El Bosque, less than an hour's drive away, is another favourite venue for enthusiasts.

As you relax after dining 'al fresco' on Llanama's lovely terrace, look up at the clear night sky. You'll be amazed at how many stars you can see.

Especially in nearby Ronda, Grazalema and Zahara, there are some charming small craft shops selling unique art objects, ceramics, rugs and baskets made from olive branches and grasses. You can also buy leather goods, glazed tiles and beautiful wool shawls hand-woven locally.

If you like walking, then this area is for you. The famous Grazalema natural park is a short drive away, but El Gastor has its own attractions for walkers. And believe it or not, the large peak behind the village can be reached easily on foot and the views from there are incredible.

Ronda is barely 30 kilometres from Llanama, and is a beautiful town. Peer over the gorge from the safety of the 'Puente Nuevo' bridge, stroll through the ancient cobbled streets and admire the old city walls, visit the Wine Museum, and rummage through the antique shops for a genuine bargain.

It is an easy drive from Llanama to the lovely city of Jerez, and horse lovers shouldn't miss the 'How The AndalucĂ­an Horses Dance' show at the Royal School of Equestrian Art on Thursdays. A guided visit to the Yeguada de La Cartuja breeding farm is also a good day out, complete with a complimentary glass of sherry.


Spot the 'gaita'
Spot the 'gaita'
A gaita is a musical instrument you will find in El Gastor and hardly anywhere else. It is made from a cow's horn with a reed in one end, and was traditionally played by local youths as they sat around bonfires to keep warm in the winter months. If you can't find the real thing, there's a statue of one outside the Town Hall of this pretty village.

Al Lago restaurant in the stunning hillside village of Zahara de la Sierra is well worth a visit. Its tree-shaded terrace overlooks the lake, the food is fresh, seasonal and organic where possible, and the dishes range from traditional and Spanish to international and modern, not forgetting those with a touch of the exotic. Prices are very reasonable. Best to book - people tend to keep going back for more!

Llanama's large poolside terrace is perfect for relaxing on a sunbed with a good book and a cool drink to hand. It's also ideal for birdwatchers who prefer to pursue their hobby lying down!

Wander round this pretty village, with its white-washed walls and wrought iron balconies with cascades of colourful geraniums. Try some tapas in one of the local bars - the one beside the public swimming pool has fabulous views over the surrounding countryside.
