With a total of 550km of signposted walks starting at Soustons-Plage, there are so many open spaces to explore. Around lakes or in forests, the Pointe des Vergnes has one of the finest views from the inland lakes. The tourist office sells a map of all the walks and bike rides you can do in the area. You can hire bicycles from Soustons.
In Soustons you have the choice between the Ocean and its large sandy beaches or to go to the lake, sometimes easier for swimming, especially with younger ones.
If you want to try your hand at surfing or kite-surfing, head to Hossegor plage, where the Atlantic rollers create the perfect conditions for these sports. For a long, wide less busy beach with small café and surf hire, try the beach just north of le Penon, near Seignosse.

For those who enjoy climbing and walking throught trees. Mini-course for children from 4 years old: slide, rope bridges, nets. Longer and bigger courses for children over 7 and adults. You can also find other activities on site
Golf and activities
You will find a 9 hole golf course in the middle of the pine woods as well as horse riding, fishing, surfing, etc... all within a short distance of Soustons.
Discover the fauna and flora from a small boat
A team of boatmen offer guided trips by small boat on Lake Soustons, lasting about 2 hours (handicapped accessible). They will help you discover the flora: cypress, hibiscus, royal fern .... and wildlife such as kingfisher, sandpiper, heron, night heron, turtle terrapin ... a delightful outing for all the family !
Boating on the lake
Hire a replica of a Mississippi steamer, a tug, a trawler or a Brittany Ferry, and spend a day on the lake, great fun for adults and children. You can also go canoeing or quietly rent a pedal boat for two.
Throughout the summer you will find local morning markets from which you can purchase lovely food for a picnic. There are also evening markets with music and dancing in Soustons.
The Seignosse Atlantic water park (16km from the house) is great fun for youngsters, with several large water chutes as well as a special area for smaller children. There is also a water park further north, Aqua Park Biscarrosse, which also has trampolines, catapult, climbing walls, slides, tubes crossing, centrifuge, giant swings.
Bayonne and Biarritz
Two picturesque and very different towns nearby (30 minute drive to Bayonne and 10 minutes more to Biarritz) where you can find lovely architecture, shops, restaurants and much more.
This coastal town just south of Biarritz is very pretty with lots of nice cafés and shops. If you walk up and along the coast, the views are lovely.
Famous for being the biggest thermal spa in France, the mineral-laden waters have been known since Roman times for their relief of rheumatic ailments and Dax has also become known for special mud treatments. There are 15 spa establishments in Dax as well as a couple in St Paul les Dax, just north of the town. Some are open to the casual visitor to book a treatment or two.
Visit the Basque country
A bit further South, near to the Pyrenees lies the beautiful Basque country with lovely villages like Cambo-les-Bains, La Bastide Clairance with its basque cakes, Espelette where red peppers are hung to dry on the house facades, and Itxassou where they make a black cherry jam to accompany the tasty ewes' cheese.
Soustons is only one hour from San Sebastian and nearer to the Spanish border should you fancy a visit there. Visit Hondarriba on the way.
You will find many Museums in the area. Here are a few: the Old Tools and Traditions museum in Soustons, The Sea and Fishing museum in Capbreton, Bonnat ( painter) museum in Bayonne, Chocolate museums in Bayonne & Biarritz and a "must" is the Musée de la Mer in Biarritz !
