The mystery that is the island of Es Vedra
What makes it so special? The unusually high levels of metals and minerals create a highly magnetic field around it. There are many myths and legends surrounding this island and its history, ranging from being the alleged birthplace of Hannibal, to being the island of the sirens in the Homer epics, through to the spot where UFOs have been spotted.

The churches dotted around the island are particularly striking
with their whitewashed walls and 3 black crosses, representing the 3 crosses on Calvary. Many of them were built with small windows and thick walls to provide sanctuary from invading pirates since this is where the people fled for protection in times of invasion.

Check out the watch towers
As you go around the island you will see watch towers at strategic points. They were used as look out points to protect the islanders from invading pirates. If a pirate ship was spotted a fire would be lit, which could be seen from the next watch tower which, in turn, would light another fire, so that the message was sent around the island of the imminent danger. This gave the locals the opportunity to take refuge in the churches.

Visit the Cova of Can Marçá.
This is a natural grotto 20 kms from Ibiza and a few kilometres from Puerto de San Miguel. The cave system was formed as a result of sea erosion and as you walk through it you will see stalactites and a 20 metre high waterfall. The cave was once used by smugglers to store their booty. Opening hours 10am to 7 pm. Tel: 971 334 776.
