Ronda Romantica

Dates not to be missed in Ronda, “Ronda Romantica”, on the 20th, 21st and 22nd May 2016. The whole town centre comes alive with the Recreation of the Romantic Era. A genuine encounter with the legendary past of this land and its identity. There are parades, battles, markets and parties galore as everyone is dressed up as old age travelers, horsemen and Bandits of the Serrania de Ronda. For the old and the young it’s a great Festival in Ronda.

From La Olgava you have stunning views of the 'pueblos blancos' of El Gastor and Olvera and you are within easy reach of many other traditional whitewashed villages, with their picturesque flower-filled streets and cobbled roads. Don't miss Zahara de la Sierra, tumbling down the hillside beneath its castle to the azure lake below, or Setenil de las Bodegas, where the houses are caves built into the overhanging rock.

The lovely town of Ronda, with its famous gorge, is only about 25 minutes drive from La Olgava. Wander its ancient streets, explore its monuments, marvel at its views, enjoy its excellent restaurants and tapas bars and soak up the very special atmosphere of this place, which nestles amongst beautiful mountains.


TRY THE LOCAL CHEESES
Visit the Payoyo artisan cheese factories in Villaluenga del Rosario or Grazalema and sample before you buy. This award-winning cheese is made from the milk of the local Payoya goats, hence the name. Cheese from the village of El Bosque, not far away, is also quite famous.

One of the most popular walks in the area, this 9km walk is easy and is best enjoyed in the spring time or autumn, when temperatures are cooler. It takes us along the valley from Benoajan to the village of Jimera, where one can enjoy the peace and quiet, abundant wildlife and unforgettable views. Catch the train back to from Jimera, in time for lunch or afternoon refreshments at the lovely terrace of the Molino del Santo in Benoajan.

Wine-lovers will be delighted to discover the Route of Wines and Wineries of Ronda. Visit local 'bodegas', sample the red wines of Ronda (which are becoming very well-known and are much admired) and buy some to take home - or to enjoy whilst taking in the gorgeous views from La Olgava's terrace.

The beautiful city of Jerez is an easy, 45 minute drive from La Olgava. Visit the Royal Equestrian School and see the wonderful show 'How the Andalusian Horses Dance'.

The beaches of the Costa de la Luz are among the most stunning in Europe and they can be reached in an hour and a half. Choose from never-ending family friendly stretches of white sand, tiny coves with rock pools, natural beaches of sand dunes or beaches lined with excellent restaurants. This is the Atlantic coast, so the sea is clear and sparkling.

The beautiful city of Seville is just over an hour's drive from La Olgava. Visit the enormous cathedral, climb the stairs to the top of La Giralda tower, which used to be a minaret, marvel at the fabulous Moorish Alcazabar, take a boat trip down the Guadalquivir River and shop until you drop - Seville is famous for its shopping opportunities!


ENJOY SOME GREAT RESTAURANTS
You may find it hard to tear yourselves away from La Olgava's well-equipped kitchen and fabulous outdoor eating areas, but some excellent restaurants are within a short drive. Whether you fancy a special night out in elegant surroundings, a lazy lunch of beautifully cooked local organic produce or a traditional 'venta' with good, simple Andalusian home cooking, you won't have to go far.

Cycling is a great way to get to know the back roads and tracks of this gorgeous part of Andalucía, and bicycles of all types can be hired in Ronda. Explore the natural parks or potter around the local area - the views are fabulous and the variety of flora and fauna is astounding.


GO WALKING
The area around and near La Olgava is ideal for walking, whether you are a beginner or an experienced hiker. There are several good books giving details of local walks, or you can go with a guide who is also a birdwatcher and botany expert. For those who prefer villages to the countryside, there are some lovely walks through the streets and surroundings of the pretty village of Grazalema. Or you can walk out of your own gate and walk a couple of kilometres to El Gastor, if you don't want to wander far from home.


RELAX!
La Olgava is a very comfortable holiday home amid stunning countryside. The ideal place to relax with a pile of good books or to curl up on a sofa and watch that DVD you have really been wanting to see. The views from the living room and the outside are so beautiful that you can spend hours just watching and enjoying them. And of course, when the weather is hot, there is that gorgeous swimming pool just outside your front door and just for you.

This area has been settled since prehistoric times and around El Gastor evidence has been found of dolmens, or Megalithic burial grounds. The most famous of these is El Charcón, commonly known as the ‘Tumba del Gigante’. This ‘Giant’s Tomb’ dating from the Bronze Age is formed by three-metre high stone pillars and a nine-metre long passageway. Just a short walk uphill from the village it makes a pleasant ramble with some great views too!

On your way up the villa, you will be amazed at the views down to the lake at nearby Zahara. You can hire kayaks and explore. Also nearby, in the high summer months there is La Playita, a lagoon of fresh spring waters, with grassed areas and trees for shade.
