This wonderful bastide, founded in 1253, sits on the River Lot in a fertile valley producing much fruit, especially known for its plums and prunes. River trade made Villeneuve the major port in the area in the 19th century where imported goods such as coffee, spices and sugar came inland from Bordeaux whilst wood and its products came from river ports further inland. The old wharfs where this business was conducted have now been converted into a modern open-air amphitheatre where free concerts take place in the summer on Wednesdays.
