The charming drive up to Thresher’s House leads through sun dappled roads, shaded by olive groves and forests that reach up the hillside with a hint of fabulous views at the top. This proud traditional stone-built property benefits from awe-inspiring vistas and wonderful secluded grounds; an ideal hideaway for those seeking a slower, more peaceful pace.
Well appointed above the tiny hamlets of Porta and Megoulas and surrounded by greenery, the charm of the villa inside is the incredible attention to detail throughout, with antiques and beamed ceilings adding unique character to the ambience. There is a large veranda at the front of the house, the stone façade and domed windows lending an almost cloistered feel. This spot is perfect for lunches in the shade, with a simple table and chairs and several pots of basil dotted about, and an enormous barbecue nearby up a few steps. A few steps down, the infinity pool is a magnificent turquoise colour that perfectly complements the deeper hues of the Mediterranean and the lighter blue of the sky.
With plenty of room to spread out, little verandas and patios operate on different levels within the grounds. To the west is a curious round veranda somewhat separate from the other patios and terraces; clearly delineated and outlined with stones is the original ‘thresher’s floor’ where donkeys’ hooves walking in a continuous circle would separate the grain from the chaff by crushing it on the hard surface. Ideal for breakfast, the main balcony that runs along the living area overlooks the stupendous panoramas of the Albanian mountains and the verdant hillsides that drop down to the cobalt Ionian Sea.
Double French windows open onto the veranda, giving light and an air of spaciousness to the interior. Comfy sofas cluster around the fireplace, and an elegant dining area is enhanced with dainty lace curtains filtering in the sunshine. An old linen chest and a customary wooden dresser, once part of a dowry, add a touch of authenticity that sits lightly in this inviting mix of old and new. A twin bedroom, decorated with pretty floral curtains and bedcovers, also has a fireplace, an old radio and some wall-mounted embroidery creating a timeless atmosphere. Another twin and a double bedroom share the balcony that runs along the main area of the house, in prime position to enjoy stunning sunsets.
Nearby Porta (1.5km) has a mini-market and two tavernas very highly recommended by the locals. The various beaches of Aghios Stefanos, Kouloura, Kerasia and Kalami are between 7km and 8.5km, all with their particular appeal just waiting to be discovered.
