Just outside Salcombe, 300 yards up from South Sands beach towards Overbecks and the Coast Path to Bolt Head (both Nat.Trust), an elegant first-floor apartment in a huge Victorian house with the most glorious views of the Salcombe estuary and coastline to Prawle Point. Around the house, well kept gardens for communal use, full of flowering shrubs, mature shady trees and quiet corners. Sixty steps from parking area to apartment; alternative shorter access a little further on from main entrance.Inside, sophisticated simplicity. Two bedrooms – a double (5’ four-poster bed) with step up to Italian-style en suite bathroom (suite, shower over bath), and a New England-style twin (TV/DVD) with those lovely views; tiled shower-room (suite).  No children under 6. The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.

Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton’s long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth’s beach and Salcombe’s location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don’t need to be brash; Bigbury’s huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.

Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area’s heart; Plymouth – the West Country’s biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area’s edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.

Salcombe: one of the most beautifully sited small towns in Britain, at the mouth of the Kingsbridge estuary, a yacht haven with creeks, sandy bays. Waterside pubs, nice shops. Boats to hire, fishing, superb Nat. Trust cliff walks/gardens; museum, tennis, outdoor swimming pool (in summer); pedestrian ferry to East Portlemouth (lovely beaches, The Venus Café and Takeaway). Thurlestone and Bigbury (golf), 6 and 8 miles.

No children under 6.
