Paleokastro is named after the old castle situated on a spit of land that forms Navarino Bay and is part of Gialova Lagoon, with stunning sea views across the valley. The pastoral landscape of fields, orchards, groves and cypress trees stretches out below the cottage, yet only 900m down the hillside is Gialova village with tavernas, shops and coffee bars all within walking distance.

An impressive stone exterior is hewn from local granite and the thick walls keep the cottage cool in the summer heat, whilst bouganvillea and yucca trees greet the visitor at the front door. The peaceful setting creates a restful ambience and one of the most popular areas to relax is the lovely pool and terrace, where shrubs and flowers offer a colourful backdrop.

Situated on the first floor to make the best of the panoramas, the contemporary double bedroom and the modern open plan living area both open onto a balcony excellent for enjoying the scenery at breakfast or an evening aperitif.

From the balcony, far-reaching views reveal the massive bay of Voidokilia, a perfect semi-circle of broad sandy beach. It is here, according to Greek mythology, that Hermes, messenger of the Gods, hid the cows he had stolen from his brother Apollon. When Apollon found his cows, Hermes, to avoid an argument, gave his brother a lyre made from the shell of a sea turtle, which even today lays its eggs on the Voidokilia crescent. Big sand dunes surrouning Voidokilia bay protect it from harsh winds and help incubate the Caretta-Caretta turtles' eggs.

This area is steeped in history and ancient folklore with the beaches of Romanou, the Ionian Sea, and Voidokilia beaches all offering a rich tapestry of rustic splendour, surrounded by valleys laddered with small rivers and ravines.

Paths winding between lemon groves lead to the spectacular Kalamari Falls, where the mighty waterfall gushes down to rocks and small pools, whilst the lagoon of Gialova is home of thousands of birds, making Messinia in the Peloponnese a nature lover's paradise!

Please note: *Due to the wooded environs barbecues are not permitted in July and August.
