Corfu’s western coastline is full of dramatic cliff tops, vast beaches and unspoilt hidden coves and bays only reached by boat. We were therefore thrilled to stumble across this rural retreat above small sandy Kanouli Beach!
Actually a continuation of the equally splendid but larger, more well known, Halikouna Beach (1.8km), this unspoilt cove, framed by striking rock formations and accessed by a narrow, usually shaded path has translucent shallow waters ideal for snorkelers and youngsters alike.
Angeliki is perched directly on the cliff top above the beach, and the owner has cleverly installed steps that lead from the garden gate directly down onto the beach itself. Sheltered from the winds, the bay's stunning scenery is verdant and all-encompassing.
The garden of Angeliki boasts fir trees and near the barbecue and dining terrace, a grassed area and large palm trees. The ocean provides the most stunning backdrop, perfect for watching the sun set whilst indulging in aperitifs and freshly grilled fish. The garden gate is an invitation to spend a day on the beach below, although the peace and quiet of the pool terrace may be temptation enough to simply stay put and enjoy a lazy day round the pool.
Inside Angeliki, the spacious living/dining area and kitchen are all easily accessible, with modern décor creating a comfortable environment in which to unwind at the heart of the house. The light and airy bedrooms are simply furnished and all open onto a terrace.
Overlooked by the Monastery of Pantocrator on top of Mount Gamillon, the countryside is surrounded by citrus and olive groves and local vineyards. The ruins of the twelfth century Byzantine Gardiki Castle (3km) show off the unique history of the region. Equally close to hand Aghios Matteos village (4km) is great to pop into for topping up on essentials. The second largest village in Corfu, it has shops, a few tavernas, coffee houses, a football team and even a brass band!
The western coastline of Corfu is full of coves, bays and sandy beaches, and Prasoudi is another lovely hidden bay with a beachfront taverna (1.2km) whilst Halikouna and Alonaki Beaches not only have tavernas but also popular watersports ranging from windsurfing to hang gliding and even kite surfing. Behind Halikouna Beach are wonderful views of Korission Lake, part of a nature reserve with sand dunes, unique wild beaches, and diverse plant and bird species.
Offering beach bars, traditional tavernas, lots of sand and plenty of space, this initmate corner of Corfu ticks all the boxes for laid-back relaxing days!
Please note: Care must be taken on the metal staircase between the garden and the beach as it is steep with narrow steps.
