Sandsgate   6 Bedrooms   |   4 Bathrooms   |   WiFi | Games Room |   |   Sleeps 12

3 miles from Chagford is Sandsgate, a magnificent detached house with superb sweeping views across the River Teign valley to Chagford, Castle Drogo and the moors beyond. It has been beautifully refurbished and extended with attention to detail and is large and roomy for one family, or flexible accommodation for groups of friends or family gatherings. Approached down ¼ mile of private drive, it’s set in 18 acres of large, lovely gardens with lawns, rockeries, ancient woodland and a prehistoric stone circle and is exceptionally peaceful. Exeter, a 20 minute drive, and the sea, 40 minutes; golf, wonderful walking and children’s attractions nearby.

A terrace (garden furniture) with far-reaching views stretches the whole length of the house. Three sets of French windows lead into the main reception rooms: large L-shaped living room with deep sofas, large inglenook (open fire), TV/Sky/DVD; off it, a study; front entrance and cloakroom (loo); very large T-shaped kitchen/dining room with massive dining tables/chairs, dresser, TV/DVD and toys for small children to play with whilst adults use the magnificent kitchen with dual-fuel range-style cooker, dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer and island with bar stools and granite worktops, or just relax in the sitting area and enjoy those views. Rear entrance hall/boot room and cloakroom (loo); adjacent utility room (two washing machines, two tumble driers, drinks fridge).

Stairs (top stairgate, second stairgate by request) up to beamed games room (22’ x 12’) with TV, pool table and football table. Four bedrooms, all with TV/Sky and Dartmoor views – the large master bedroom with 4’ twin beds, en suite bathroom (suite with separate shower) and sun room to one side with full-length glass doors opening to a balcony, a great place to sit with a glass of wine and look out to Castle Drogo; another large room with 4’ twin beds; a double; and a room with 5' double plus single bed. Also on this floor, shower-room (suite) and large beautiful bathroom (suite with jacuzzi bath and separate shower).

More stairs up to the top floor with the same great views from two large attic bedrooms, both twin (one with 3’6” beds and TV), and bathroom (suite plus hand-shower).

Dartmoor: "the last great wilderness in Southern England". Great rock-tors top many of its often heather-covered hills. Marvellous for walking, riding, tor-climbing, picnicking, kite-flying, pony-trekking and, if you’re at all energetic, not seeing other people. Just off its edge, amid woods, valleys and farmed hills, are many pretty villages (sometimes thatched) and very lively small towns. All is protected from caravans, tents and most ugliness by being in the Dartmoor National Park.

The half of the moor north of the B3212 is the highest and wildest; no villages within it, almost no cultivation. The southern half has the most spectacular tors, best wooded river valleys, a few villages (like Widecombe, Buckland) in green-field ‘oases’. The moor’s eastern edge is the softest, most wooded, most popular: Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey are among its best villages, and the river Teign is an exceptionally beautiful river valley. The Dart(s) – two of them rise in the moor’s middle and join at Dartmeet – is/are equally beautiful all the way to the sea at Dartmouth. Very lovely, too, are the valleys of the rivers Avon, Erme, Walkham and Tavy; Tavy Cleave, on the latter, is the western moor’s most dramatic place. The quality of a pub can change so quickly we hesitate to recommend, but there are plenty of them; and of places to ride or pony-trek.

Chagford: lively, friendly little town (pubs, shops, outdoor swimming pool, tennis) away from main roads in the shelter of high Dartmoor. Past it the River Teign (fishing) hurries through woods and meadows below Castle Drogo (Nat. Trust). Excellent walking; superb views. Open moor, 2 miles; golf, 3; Exeter (city amenities), 17; sea/beaches, about 20.
