The Périgord Noir region of the Dordogne is justifiably famous for its stunning scenery, an abundance of chateaux and pre-historic caves (many of which can be visited) and eye catching medieval villages. From the deep-cut valley, through which the imposing River Dordogne makes its way, the country lanes wind their way up to the dense woods of oak and walnut trees, interspersed with fields and tiny hamlets.

It was in one such hamlet that we came across La Bergerie, built of local stone and distinctive in shape.  Throughout, burnished wood floors and doors, an impressive stone fireplace and an unusual wood divider between kitchen and living room, allude to the past, whilst modern furnishings and fixtures ensure today’s comforts are not forgotten.

Large sliding glass doors at one end of the kitchen diner create a contemporary feel and give direct access onto the covered terrace.  A decked area neatly sits between the dining terrace and the enclosed, heated pool, creating a seamless link between indoor and outdoor living. From the garden, open views across the surrounding countryside and woodland can be enjoyed.

Essential amenities can be found in Villefranche du Périgord (8km) with the towns of Belvès (20km) and Monpazier (17km) offering further choice. Visit on market day and you will find stalls teeming with local produce.  Of note is the market (Wednesday & Saturday) in the ‘vieille ville’ of Sarlat (38km), where the stalls line the medieval streets of honey coloured stone.
