Sitting in grounds of almost four acres scattered with bougainvillea, olive, fig, palm, citrus and almond trees this spacious, converted farmhouse is one of the most traditionally styled properties in our Algarve portfolio. Placing modern fixtures and fittings alongside numerous original features, the furnishings, equipment and décor throughout Quinta de la Cruz are a comprehensive fusion of old and new creating an atmosphere that is, in turn, welcoming, homely and more than a little evocative of a bygone era.
Electric entrance gates and a driveway lined with colourful bougainvillea beckon you to the house entrance where a distinctively arched front door perfectly sets the tone for the unique property lying beyond. Formerly part of a church confessional, the door still retains the ornate central grill through which hushed conversations once took place.
Inside, 16th Century hand-painted ceramics surround the fireplace, handmade ladrillo tiles (replete with the potter’s thumbprints!) form the dining room floor, and an eclectic selection of aged oil paintings, ornaments and memorabilia adorns the shelves and walls.
Singular antique pieces include a fascinating jewellers’ cabinet from the 17th Century, plus a rare and virtually complete Vista Alegre dinner service, similar to the gift Queen Elizabeth II received from the State during her 1957 visit to Portugal. Acid etching to certain mirrors and the glass ceiling of the en suite bathroom further enhance the traditional ambience.
With a double bedroom, twin bedroom and a two single bedrooms, the sleeping accommodation lends itself particularly well to families of mixed age groups. Of note is that one of the single bedrooms is quite simply furnished and accessed from either the covered terrace and/or the Jack n’ Jill bathroom shared with the twin room, so may be best suited to a teenager or as a nursery/bedroom for a nanny.
Home to an impressive variety of shrubs - including a huge carob tree and a small lawn from where there are views across to the outskirts of Carvoiero and the sea – the colourful garden has plenty of space for seekers of sun, shade or solitude. Towering over the secluded and private poolside terrace is an 18m high palm tree - the tallest for many miles and a notable local landmark.
A minimarket, pizzeria, two local bars and an à la carte restaurant are all within a few hundred metres, while the tennis courts and gymnasium of the well known Carvoiero Club are about a 5 minute drive/20 minute walk. Four supermarkets, two local fresh food and fish markets, two golf courses, five sandy beaches, the fishing village of Ferragudo as well as Carvoeiro itself are all within 4km.
Maid service three days per week. Laundry service can be arranged with housekeeper (reasonable use is free of charge). Telephone calls (if made) are on a meter and paid directly to housekeeper. Additional, portable air conditioning units may be requested at time of booking (€50 per unit, paid directly to housekeeper) – please note that floor space will be limited if units are placed in the single bedroom(s).
The maximum occupancy at this house is 5 people. While six beds remain available for use we ask that the maximum occupancy of five is not exceeded.
