Great Things to Do Near La Bastide de Mougins

Chateau La Napoule

This medieval fortress set in magnificent gardens was built in 1387 by the Counts of Villeneuve, but by the early 20th century had been reduced to a semi-ruin. An American artist couple, Henry and Marie Clews, bought it in 1917 and set about restoring it. Whilst Henry focussed on the restoration of the castle's architecture, Marie was the driving force behind the gardens, which are recognised as outstanding by the Ministry of Culture. There are various artworks dotted around the gardens, and Henry's own art can be seen in the chateau museum.

Visit Valbonne

a very pretty, well preserved small town, which dates back to the early 16th century. Its lovely central square is surrounded by tiny streets laid out in an unusually geometric grid pattern. Quite touristy but deservedly so, with lots of boutiques, art galleries and restaurants dotted about.

Grasse and the Parfumeries

Grasse is internationally renowned for its perfume production, and offers ample opportunity to sample and buy perfumes and a wide variety of fragranced goods. Discover the origins of perfume making at the Fragonard, Molinard or Galimard perfume factories or at the fascinating Musée International de la Parfumerie. Just 20 minutes drive from Le Bastide de Mougins.

Keep the children entertained

Have a fun family day out down on the coast near Antibes, where you can choose from the Espace Marineland marine park, the Aquasplash water park, the Far West theme park and also a mini-golf course.

Visit Cannes

Any trip to Cannes should start on the Promenade de la Croisette: a tree-lined avenue stretching along the Mediterranean coastline, and at the heart of all the city's action. The town's most famous hotels are to be found here, along with a great selection of designer shops and restaurants. Be sure to take in the Palais des Festivals, the hub of all the red-carpet action during the Cannes festival. Wander west of the Palais des Festivals to discover the real Cannes beneath the showbiz glitz and glamour. Stroll around the beautiful Vieux Port before following rue St-Antoine up to Le Suquet, Cannes' oldest district, for incredible views of the bay.

Enjoy the beach

Cannes has plenty of sandy beaches, try the public beaches of Plage du Midi or the Plage de la Bocca for free sunbathing and swimming or pay a daily membership fee and join the jet-set at one of the private beach clubs along La Croisette.

Food, glorious food!

Famed for its culinary connections, the great chefs Roger Vergé and Alain Ducasse have both managed restaurants in Mougins, particularly the highly regarded restaurant L'Amandier. Situated in the heart of the old village it continues to offer excellent cuisine under the expert eye of Denis Fétisson. Why not take a course at his Cookery School, offering personalised cookery classes and even the opportunity to prepare a whole meal alongside the chef himself? Mougins plays host to the annual 'International Gastronomy Festival of Mougins', or 'Les Étoiles de Mougins', every September.

Mougins' art heritage

Mougins has been considered home by many famous artists including Fernand Léger, and Pablo Picasso. Today, there are many art galleries to explore in the narrow streets and the Musee d'Art Classique de Mougins should not be missed. The studio of Fernand Léger was above what is now the village wine shop. If you want to learn more about him, visit the museum in Biot. Picasso spent the last 12 years of his life living in the village, and his studio was in the old village in a building that is now the tourist office. There is a museum dedicated to Picasso's work in Antibes.

Venture to Nice

A 30 minute drive will take you to the capital of the French Riviera, the city of Nice, a veritable goldmine for lovers of culture, art, retail and cuisine. As well as offering a wealth of culinary delights at the many restaurants and cafés that line the sun-soaked streets, Nice is a feast for the senses with its daily markets offering an abundance of flowers, local produce and Provençal crafts. In addition, the city is a must-visit for cultural enthusiasts, with over 20 museums and galleries, and was home and inspiration to the world famous modernist artist Henri Matisse for over 30 years.

Teeing off

Keen golfers will be delighted to discover several golf courses nearby. The Claux Amic, Grande Bastide and Cannes-Mougins courses are all a short drive from Le Bastide de Mougins. For a unique golfing experience, try out the Old Course at Mandelieu, the Côte d'Azur's oldest golf course and modelled on the famous course at St Andrews in Scotland.

Lac de Saint Cassien

Located about 40 minutes drive inland, this beautiful lake is a favourite with adults and children alike. The lake is seven kilometers long and offers the perfect spot to enjoy the rowing boats, canoes or pedaloes available for hire. The lake is surrounded by a network of footpaths, which you can enjoy on foot, by bike or on horseback from the pony trekking centre. Set amongst the shade of the pine trees, there are numerous picnic areas and a café-restaurant. Fishing in the lake is also very popular, from the banks, the jetties or even by boat.

Make a splash!

Mandelieu and Cannes offer water sports such as water skiing and windsurfing, as well as boat hire.

Anyone for tennis?

There are tennis courts available at Mougins.

The nearby Parc de la Valmasque

presents over 561 hectares of beautiful parkland, wooded hills and undulating vales, which are ideal for walking and cycling as a family.

Antibes

Explore the little streets of the Vieux Ville (old town) where you will discover the impressive cathedral as well as the Picasso museum, housed in the Chateau Grimaldi. Then follow the coast road around the headland, to admire the fancy yachts in the marina as well as the more humble fishing boats with their nets piled up on the quay.

Treetop adventure courses

Great fun for kids (and adults!) who enjoy taking on a challenge and being outdoors. ‘Pitchoun Forest’ is a mini course especially geared up for children as young as 3 years old. Along the way there are nature-themed questions to answer and hidden animals to find. At ‘Canyon Forest’ in Villeneuve, older children and adults can tackle a larger scale adventure course. Rope swings, nets, log bridges, zip wires across the river etc!
