Nestling in a secluded location in the valley five minutes' drive from the villages of La Garde-Freinet and Grimaud, La Mente enjoys uninterrupted, panoramic views towards Saint-Tropez. This stunning single storey villa is centred around a beautiful enclosed courtyard that effortlessly fuses outdoor living with modern indoor amenities.

When we first visited we fell in love with the beautiful courtyard at La Mente, fashioned with comfortable seating that creates a sociable space at any time of the day or night, surrounded by oleander, jasmine and other Mediterranean potted plants creating an oasis of colour. A raised covered dining area with magnificent stone table is perfect for your Provençal meals. Surrounding the courtyard, there’s a superb professionally equipped kitchen, four bedrooms and gorgeous, wooden beamed living room. A soft contemporary colour scheme, quality furnishings and stone floors throughout create the feeling of a much-loved home. There are two shower rooms and a master bathroom finished in local stone, designed for indulgence and sure to impress.

The grounds are on different levels, rich with well-established shrubs and trees that blend into the surrounding woodland. A grassy terrace affords  magnificent views from which to watch the evening sunset and, in the shadow of an orange tree, a paved terrace is our recommended place for morning coffee and a croissant! The more energetic might play table tennis or walk down for a swim in the private pool accessed via a small path. The south facing pool is on a lower level of the garden. Here is perfect seclusion, where just the cicadas will accompany you whilst you eat and swim.

From La Mente guests can access on foot a network of footpaths and cycle tracks through the surrounding oak and chestnut woods. The area is very well known for its walks. Five minutes’ drive up the hill is the village of La Garde-Freinet (5km), a pretty, vibrant town with cafés and restaurants and a twice weekly market. Five minutes in the other direction brings you to the medieval hilltop village of Grimaud (5km) with its vineyards and castle. Sainte Maxime and the beaches of the ever-appealing Saint-Tropez are just a short drive away, with Pampelonne beach (24km) being another local favourite.

The path to the pool area is steep in places.
Please note that there is a small drop protected by plant pots only, from the covered dining area to the courtyard.
Children will need supervision due to terraced grounds.

Woodland walks and cycle rides

Beaches

The nearest beaches are at Port Grimaud, or you can go a little further to either Sainte-Maxime or Saint-Tropez. South of Saint-Tropez, near Ramatuelle, Pampelonne beach is a long sweeping bay that became iconic as a movie location and is associated with the glitterati, but is also appreciated for its natural beauty and sand dunes instead of high-rise buildings.

La Croix Valmer

has been a popular holiday destination since Roman times, and a key feature of the village are the grand 'belle-epoque' villas dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. You will find a number of cafés and restaurants, and a small open-air theatre where performances are sometimes held in summer.

Seaside villages

Take a drive west and discover the villages along the coast: Cavalaire, Aiguebelle, Le Lavandou, Bormes les Mimosas...

Coastal walks

Long stretches of the coastal path are accessible in this region, affording some absolutely stunning views. You may like to follow some of the 18km route from Cavalaire beach to Cap Camarat, much of which is a protected zone for Mediterranean wildlife. Some beaches are only accessible via the coastal path, so these are of course less crowded even in high summer.

An 'underwater path'

Don flippers, mask and snorkel to explore the marine flora and fauna of the coastal waters at close quarters. It is self-guided, but you will follow a designated 'path' with submerged information panels, and plenty to see including a shipwreck and an anemone garden. The starting point is 1km from the Gigaro beach car park in La Croix Valmer.

The gardens of the Domaine de Rayol

Explore the wonderful array of gardens at Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer. As well as Mediterranean flora, there are dedicated areas for plants from other parts of the world, such as the Australian garden, the Chilean garden and so on. In contrast to the formality found in many European gardens, here there is an emphasis on working with nature rather than trying to constrain it. You can wander and discover the different landscapes at your own pace, with or without an audio guide, or you can take a guided tour to get extra insight and information.

Ramatuelle

Laid out in a spiral shape, this pretty medieval village sits on a little hill overlooking the Bay of Pampelonne. Both the buildings and the way of life here are well preserved, giving visitors a flavour of traditional Provence. In the summer, there are many open workshops and arts & crafts on display. The main square, the Place de l'Ormeau, hosts a market every Thursday and Sunday.

Water sports

are available at Port Grimaud, St Tropez, Ste Maxime and La Croix Valmer

Teeing off

The Beauvallon, Sainte-Maxime and Saint-Tropez golf clubs each offer 18 holes with great views, and are between 20 to 40 minutes from the house respectively.

St Tropez

Go celebrity spotting and enjoy the high life in this famously chic seaside town. Take a stroll along the pretty waterfront to admire all the fancy boats in the port, then through the narrow streets lined with pastel facades up to the town centre where shopaholics and gastronomes will be in seventh heaven.

Massif des Maures

The countryside around here is called the Massif des Maures where the hills are thickly covered with cork oaks, chestnut trees and umbrella pines. It's a great area for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. Collobrières, in the heart of the Massif, is a characterful little town famous for 'marrons glacés' (sugared chestnuts).

Day trip to Porquerolles

Head west to Hyères, and take the boat across to the Ile de Porquerolles. A National Park, it boasts beautiful unspoilt white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, and you will find no cars on the island!

Grimaud

Discover this gem of a hilltop village, taking time to stroll its pretty streets and soak up the atmosphere, and stopping for lunch at one of its restaurants.

Keep everyone entertained

at the Aqualand water park in Sainte Maxime, or at 'Azur Park' at Port Grimaud with its various rides and attractions for all the family.
