One of only four villas to enjoy this very privileged location Alexandra is a characterful gem. Sitting on a gentle hillside, surrounded by olive groves, expansive far reaching views across the verdant undulating landscape to the azure Ionian Sea can be enjoyed from the property’s windows, balconies and spacious terraces. Nearby, the sleepy village of Stavros (975m) is home to good amenities including a minimarket, bakery and a smattering of family-run tavernas serving a range of typically tasty local dishes.

First impressions count and Alexandra can compete with the best. Eye-catching crimson shutters complement the myriad mellow hues of the exposed stonework, a striking and most impressive feature of the property both inside and out.

On either side of the house two spacious terraces, each boasting those glorious sea views across open countryside, make al fresco living a joy. Long lazy days around the pool will surely drift by listening to the manicured cypress trees rustling in the gentle breeze before firing up the barbecue for dinner and pouring, perhaps, a cooling aperitif?

Internally a high ceiling and galleried landing lend a fresh and airy feel to the living space on those hot days of high summer. Décor is an appealing blend of both modern and rustic oak furniture accompanied throughout by wooden floors and walls of open stone/brickwork. On the ground floor a well equipped kitchen, twin bedroom and shower room border the open plan living and dining area leading onto a splendid shaded terrace (a perfect spot for memorable meals) with gated access to the pool area.

Equally atmospheric, the first floor has a double bedroom and en suite bathroom as well as a lovely galleried landing overlooking the living area.

Alexandra sits just 975m from the village of Stavros in the northern Pilikata region of Ithaca, an island of quintessential Greek charm widely celebrated as one of the most relaxing and laid back in the Ionian.

A stroll up to Stavros will take about 15-20 minutes and you are never very far from the coast for a languid dip in the tempting turquoise waters! Polis Beach is about 1km from the village, Kourvoulia, Tsitsimida, Marmakas and Alikes on the west coast are all within a 10-20 minute drive while there are numerous other stretches of pebbled beach/shoreline in and around the large Bay of Afales (around 2km) including Platia Amnos a lovely wide stretch of fine white sand accessible only by boat and widely considered to be the best beach on the island.

Getting to Ithaca

Not having its own airport, we recommend flying into the neighbouring island of Kefalonia.  From Kefalonia airport there are a number of options to get to Ithaca (which we can book for you).
  1. Book car hire for Kefalonia (from £218 per week Group B) and the car ferry to Ithaca (£40 per car, and £8 per person return)
  2. Taxi transfer from Kefalonia Airport to port (£110 return - up to 4 persons), cross to Ithaca as a foot passenger (£8 per person return), Collect car hire on Ithaca (from £211 per week Group A)
It takes 50-60mins to drive from the airport to the port. Guests must therefore book flights to arrive on Kefalonia before 13:15 on arrival day in order to allow sufficient time to catch the (only) public ferry
Families with younger children will be interested to know that there is a gate on the covered terrace off the living room which can be closed to restrict access to the pool area. When this gate is closed the pool area can only be accessed by exiting through the front door of the property and walking around the rear of the house. The housekeeper is pleased to offer a laundry service on request - reasonable use of this facility is complimentary to all Alexandra guests.

Great Things to Do Near Alexandra

Polis Beach

Just a short drive brings you to Polis beach. Boat hire is available here to enable exploration of the stunning coast and secluded beaches. On the north side is Loizos cave, once a place of worship for various gods.

Visit Rizes Cave

A natural cave hidden within trees just beyond the village of Perachori sitting around 30 minutes from Stavros. Local legend suggests that this might be Eumaisos’ cave, the shepherd who helped Odysseus when he returned to Ithaca.

Anogi Village

Once one of the most important villages on the island, and certainly one of the oldest, dating back to medieval times, this now almost deserted village is famous for its prehistoric monuments, known as Menir. Among these impressive rocks with bizarre shapes, Arakli is the most famous which is 8 metres high and stands east of Anogi. Its strange shape and the symmetrical furrows on its surface give the impression that this is a work of art.

Visit the Naval and Folklore museum in Vathy

And learn more of the great folk traditions and culture of the island, along with the history of their seafaring heritage. Open July and August, mornings only, except Mondays. It is just off Geor Drakouli street.

Kioni Village

On the north side of the island and surrounded by lush green hillsides, this gem is considered to be one of the most picturesque spots, with gorgeous translucent blue green waters.

Go to the beach!

Filiatro is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Backed by olive groves, this pebble beach has exotic blue green waters. There is a taverna on the beach.

Sea Kayaking

With its rocky coastline, secluded bays and pebble beaches, exploring in a sea kayak is the ideal way to get to know this stunning island. Organised trips are available or you can hire your kayaks and do it at your own pace.

Ample opportunities to enjoy this pastime are to be had from the many beaches on the island.

A fantastic way to discover the delights of the sea on an organised dive. Odyssey Diving Club run organised excursions from Vathy.

Take a boat trip from Vathy

Visit the fabulous secluded beach of Gidaki, which can only be reached by boat or by foot. Hiking paths lead from here across the island to small villages and ancient remains. Afterwards, take a refreshing dip in the crystal clear waters before returning to Vathy harbour (around 30 minutes from Stavros village). Sun beds and umbrellas are available to hire and there is a taverna.

Visit the Monastery of Kathara

otherwise known as Panagia Kathariotissa. It is located on the highest spot on Ithaca and the views from here are spectacular, taking in the Ionian Sea.
