The splendid situation of Fylira offers the best of both worlds: a laid back atmosphere for relaxing holidays lazing around the private swimming pool while at the same time being within short walking distance of shops, beach and waterside tavernas.

The pool, terrace and barbecue encourage a life lived al fresco. Attractive vistas across the village rooftops from the large terrace on the entrance level will provide an irresistible location for a leisurely breakfast or maybe an early evening aperitif. Framing Kalami Bay on both sides are hillsides covered with dense forests and olive groves, the mountains of Albania outlined in the distance directly opposite.

The façade of the top storey is painted a traditional shade of ochre whilst the lower level has a simple whitewashed exterior with green window shutters. The elegant white interior combines a well designed kitchen with neat distressed cupboards, a stylish chandelier matching the comfy sofas of the main living area and a chic glass dining suite.

Wide spiral stairs lead to the first floor revealing a double bedroom with en suite shower room and a delightful balcony. A lovely double and twin bedroom are situated on the garden level, each with air conditioning, an en suite shower room and direct access to the pool and terrace.

Surrounding the pool terrace are bushes, shrubs and colourful bougainvillea. At the end of the garden a tiny gate opens onto a pathway providing a short cut to the beach and amenities in the charming village of Kalami. Waterside tavernas, several mini-markets and a couple of bars make up this little gem of a village, well known in literary circles as the location of the ‘White House’ once the home of Lawrence Durrell (brother of Gerald). Now a restaurant at the far end of Kalami bay, it is worth a stroll there to admire the views.

All the basic essentials are found in Kalami: lovely sea views, a short stroll to beachside tavernas and a chance to feel part of Greek village life. Koloura (a 15 minute walk) is the smaller bay next door from where a boat runs to Corfu Town several times a week – a relaxing and alternative way to experience the history and diversity of the island capital.

Please note: Access to the first floor is via a wide spiral staircase leading directly into the bedroom.

Great Things to Do Near Fylira

A bookworm's delight - Lawrence Durrells home

Visit the white house in Kalami. Home to the Durrell family back in the 40's, whilst Lawrence wrote his novel, Prospero's Cell, and where Gerald created his novel, My family and other animals both a must read before heading of on holiday to Corfu. There is a taverna on the premises which is a delightful stop-over to enjoy the scenery.

Take the evening boat from the Kalami jetty to the 'village' of Agni to enjoy a meal in one of the 3 waterfront tavernas. It is best to book a table beforehand as this village is well known for its food.

An evening boat trip to Corfu Town,

starting in Kassiopi, is a lovely way to while away an evening, and takes the strain away from having to drive in the dark to the fabulous shops in Corfu Town. This is a wonderful way to see Corfu town at night, and to have the added advantage of cruising back in the dark - star gazing on the sea. Heaven!

Just laze by the pool in the brilliant sunshine.... ..

cooled by a gentle mountain breeze, before rolling into the pool for a lazy swim and feel life's stresses peel away.

Go to another island for the day - Paxos

A truly idyllic Island – very uncommercial (as are ALL islands are that do not have an airport). Paxos is a tiny Island, with only 3 small coastal villages, and, of course, a very famous little sister in Anti-Paxos (small Paxos!) where the beach reminds you of images from the Caribbean.

Take a trip to Agios Stefanos

Visit the pretty little fishing village set between Kalami and Kassiopi which is home to waterfront tavernas, mini-markets, shops and boat hire.

Glass bottom boat

This is far more than just a trip on a glass bottom boat. As well as seeing the wonders of the Ionian sea, you'll also be taken to the amazing caves close to Ermones that can only be accessed from the sea, and then you will be left to enjoy the afternoon on Paradise beach - a huge expanse of white sand/shingle beach and aqua marine sea, no road, and only accessed by sea – truly amazing. These trips leave from the village of Paleokastritsa daily.

Visit the Achileon Palace

Built in the late 19th century, for Sissy (Elisabeth), the empress of Austria. This beautiful palace has wonderful gardens, excellent views and is well worth a visit. You will find it well signposted, and is close to the village of Gastouri, heading south from Corfu town.

Bird watching

Ornithologists will know about the bird watching in the mountain of Pantokrator, where you can see several different species of hunting birds, amongst others.

Kerasia Beach

With its crystal clear waters which are great for snorkeling, this pebbly beach is one of the most idyllic spots on the island.

Take a trip to the 3 Islands (Diapondia) off the north coast.

Erikousa, Mathraki and Othoni are 3 very quiet and completely un-commercial islands 11 nautical miles off the north coast of Corfu. This caique trip, mostly departing from the resort of Sidari, takes about 1 hour and is well worth the trip. You can have lunch on one of the Islands, and the photo opportunities on both journeys are brilliant.

For a fun day out for the children

(and the adults too) Aqualand is on the 'must do' list for all families visiting the Island. It really is a great place, very relaxing and a lot of fun for all. You'll find it very well signposted throughout the Island. It is located in the village of Agios Ioannis, just 10 minutes out of Corfu Town.

Go walking along the many trails.

The coastal path from Agios Stefanos to Nissaki is particularly enjoyable, passing through Kerasia, Kouloura and Kalami. Take your bathing costume, some money for a delicious lunch - and a little bit extra in case you decide to take a taxi back home after over indulging on the wine!

Blue flag beaches

See how many blue flag beaches you can swim on during your stay, an ideal way of seeing the Island, experiencing the diversity of the Island, and having a lot of fun at the same time.

read Gerald Durrell's My family and other animals

His book was based on the area of Vigla, Kalami, Kouloura and he writes about the carpets of cyclamen found in the Spring in the area walking up from Kalami to Vigla
