Walking through the gate of Niovi for the first time, we were instantly smitten by the eye-catching contrast in colour between the terracotta-hued exterior and pretty emerald shades of the shutters and pergola. Glistening attractively in the centre of the garden the private pool and surrounding greenery further enhance an already colourful collage.

Situated in the heart of Kalami, a selection of tavernas, a couple of mini-markets and little shops as well as a haphazard cluster of houses are virtually all that make up this pretty village where each tiny alleyway seems to lead you down to the sea and striking, horseshoe-shaped bay. Surely nothing more is required for a restful holiday - particularly when it is a mere ‘hop, skip and jump’ from Niovi to the family-friendly beach which is accessed directly across the lane from the house.

Entering the villa, the chic interior, an elegant mix of traditional and modern décor, is a delight from the start. The smart white kitchen has cherry wood counter tops, a matching dining table and pretty, distressed-style chairs. On either side of the compact living area are two bedrooms each with en suite shower rooms and French doors leading out to the garden and pool terrace.

The lower floor houses a further twin bedroom with an en suite while, on the first floor a charming bedroom, again en suite, has its own terrace offering lovely views of the hillsides on either side and the sea to the front. An inviting dining terrace sits ready for outdoor breakfasts and long, lingering barbecues in the evenings.

Dining out in Kalami is a refreshingly informal affair; several waterside tavernas spill out their tables and chairs onto the beach where children can run and play freely, allowing the grown-ups time to set the world to rights! Starlit skies, balmy nights and the soft murmur of the sea as a backdrop, a holiday idyll maybe - but such soothing locations do indeed exist.

During the day, the coastal walks to the neighbouring coves and bays are a wonderful way to explore the headlands of this beautiful part of the island. Alternatively, hire a little boat, pack a picnic and spend the day sailing the seas; you are guaranteed to see a completely different and very memorable side of Corfu.

  • Please note: While the bedrooms can comfortably sleep 8 people we feel Niovi is best suited to a maximum of 6 adults.
  • The twin beds can be made up as one double bed on request – please ask at time of booking.

Location of Niovi

Great Things to Do Near Niovi

Read Gerald Durrell's My family and other animals

His book was based on the area of Vigla, Kalami, Kouloura and he writes about the carpets of cyclamen found in the Spring in the area walking up from Kalami to Vigla

Blue flag beaches

See how many blue flag beaches you can swim on during your stay, an ideal way of seeing the Island, experiencing the diversity of the Island, and having a lot of fun at the same time.

Go walking along the many trails.

The coastal path from Agios Stefanos to Nissaki is particularly enjoyable, passing through Kerasia, Kouloura and Kalami. Take your bathing costume, some money for a delicious lunch - and a little bit extra in case you decide to take a taxi back home after over indulging on the wine!

For a fun day out for the children

(and the adults too) Aqualand is on the 'must do' list for all families visiting the Island. It really is a great place, very relaxing and a lot of fun for all. You'll find it very well signposted throughout the Island. It is located in the village of Agios Ioannis, just 10 minutes out of Corfu Town.

Take a trip to the 3 Islands (Diapondia) off the north coast.

Erikousa, Mathraki and Othoni are 3 very quiet and completely un-commercial islands 11 nautical miles off the north coast of Corfu. This caique trip, mostly departing from the resort of Sidari, takes about 1 hour and is well worth the trip. You can have lunch on one of the Islands, and the photo opportunities on both journeys are brilliant.

Kerasia Beach

With its crystal clear waters which are great for snorkeling, this pebbly beach is one of the most idyllic spots on the island.

Bird watching

Ornithologists will know about the bird watching in the mountain of Pantokrator, where you can see several different species of hunting birds, amongst others.

Visit the Achileon Palace

Built in the late 19th century, for Sissy (Elisabeth), the empress of Austria. This beautiful palace has wonderful gardens, excellent views and is well worth a visit. You will find it well signposted, and is close to the village of Gastouri, heading south from Corfu town.

Glass bottom boat

This is far more than just a trip on a glass bottom boat. As well as seeing the wonders of the Ionian sea, you'll also be taken to the amazing caves close to Ermones that can only be accessed from the sea, and then you will be left to enjoy the afternoon on Paradise beach - a huge expanse of white sand/shingle beach and aqua marine sea, no road, and only accessed by sea – truly amazing. These trips leave from the village of Paleokastritsa daily.

Take a trip to Agios Stefanos

Visit the pretty little fishing village set between Kalami and Kassiopi which is home to waterfront tavernas, mini-markets, shops and boat hire.

Go to another island for the day - Paxos

A truly idyllic Island – very uncommercial (as are ALL islands are that do not have an airport). Paxos is a tiny Island, with only 3 small coastal villages, and, of course, a very famous little sister in Anti-Paxos (small Paxos!) where the beach reminds you of images from the Caribbean.

Just laze by the pool in the brilliant sunshine.... ..

cooled by a gentle mountain breeze, before rolling into the pool for a lazy swim and feel life's stresses peel away.

An evening boat trip to Corfu Town,

starting in Kassiopi, is a lovely way to while away an evening, and takes the strain away from having to drive in the dark to the fabulous shops in Corfu Town. This is a wonderful way to see Corfu town at night, and to have the added advantage of cruising back in the dark - star gazing on the sea. Heaven!

Take the evening boat from the Kalami jetty to the 'village' of Agni to enjoy a meal in one of the 3 waterfront tavernas. It is best to book a table beforehand as this village is well known for its food.

A bookworm's delight - Lawrence Durrells home

Visit the white house in Kalami. Home to the Durrell family back in the 40's, whilst Lawrence wrote his novel, Prospero's Cell, and where Gerald created his novel, My family and other animals both a must read before heading of on holiday to Corfu. There is a taverna on the premises which is a delightful stop-over to enjoy the scenery.
