A steady ascent up the winding mountain road that leads to Villa Kourouni rewards visitors with the most spectacular 360° view encompassing a vast swathe of countryside, coast and open sea. Occupying a unique, commanding position fringed by olive groves, the location of Villa Kouroni is nothing short of breathtaking and undoubtedly ranks alongside the best of any house in our portfolio.

Designed and externally finished in traditional Cretan stone this impressive, elevated position affords visitors quite simply one of the best views in Western Crete (this same site was in fact used by the Resistance during World War II as a vantage point to watch for approaching enemy troops!). From the pool terrace one can see all along the North coast of the island as far as Kolimbari to the West and Chania Town/Souda bay in the East.

Leading up from the private parking area a gently sloping pathway and four steps convey you to the house entrance, part of a large arch-shaped panoramic window that floods the interior with light. The accommodation unfolds conveniently across one level and comprises an open plan living/dining area, modern fitted kitchen, three bedrooms and three bathrooms.

Each bedroom is air conditioned with views to the sea and doors leading to the pool terrace.

Just a few minutes’ drive downhill brings you to the sleepy village of Apano Stalos where you will find three tavernas of excellent repute as well as a mini market for everyday essentials. From here the excellent amenities and golden sandy beaches of Kato Stalos (Star Beach) and Agia Apostoli (Golden Beach plus two more) are just a ten minute drive.

To the south side of the house there is a lovely shady terrace with stone table and enchanting views towards the Lefki Ori white mountains of Western Crete. From here follow the sand-coloured stone pathway as it meanders along to another shady spot and barbecue area.

The famous Samaria Gorge is just an hour’s drive from Villa Kourouni as are several smaller gorges and dozens of walking and cycle trails suitable for all levels of ability. Water sports can be found at Aghia Marina (a 15 minute drive) and there are several sailing boats and diving schools dotted along the coast. The wildlife lake at Agia is well worth a visit to see freshwater turtles and the many exotic birds either living there or temporarily visiting on their migratory routes to/from Africa. A couple of lakeside cafés provide handy refreshment.

Reached in just 20 minutes, the beautiful Venetian port of Chania old town is world famous and is a marvellous spot for a meal around the atmospheric harbour or a browse in the bustling bazaars that line the cobbled back streets.

Great Things to Do Near Villa Kourouni

Elafonissi Island

At the extreme south west corner of Crete you will find Elafonissi beach and the tiny islet of the same name.  Wade across the shallow lagoon to the pink tinged shoreline of this remarkable island which is protected by the Natura 2000 organisation. In high summer it does get very busy. Best to go as early as you can to beat the crowds!

Chania Harbour

Chania is the capital of the Prefecture of the same name and the second biggest town in Crete, with a population of 60,000 inhabitants. Chania is one of the nicest towns of Crete with wonderful houses, parks and squares. The old city has preserved the charm of the Venetian and Turkish periods. Entire Venetian, Turkish and Jewish quarters are saved, with many well preserved buildings in the narrow picturesque streets. On Leather Lane near the harbour selling all kinds and qualities of leather goods and a really interesting indoor covered market Chania Town is worth a visit just for the shopping. The harbour is beautiful with an old mosque providing interesting architecture. Museums from the Naval Museum to the Byzantine Museum there is something for everyone. Restaurants and Taverna`s Surround the harbour and Boats leave from here for 2-3hr trips and you can also catch a horse and buggy. Have a wonder around the back streets, they are mainly pedestrianised and the houses and shops are very Interesting and pretty, with little restaurants and Café's tucked away in corners - very romantic.

Vist the Wetlands!

Ornothologists may spot the glossy ibis, the crane, the white stork and a variety of egrets and herons, as well as warblers and wagtails. For the dedicated bird-spotters, Crete is one of the last strongholds in Europe of the Lammergeier, or Bearded Vulture – with a wingspan of almost 3 metres. There are 9 to 10 pairs on the island and they frequent higher altitudes.

Visit the Palace of Knossos

Excavated in the year 1900 by an English archaeologist by the name of Sir Arthur Evans, this is a most impressive palace, and we recommend that you hire a guide in order to benefit from their wealth of knowledge. This makes a great day out for all of the family.

One man's folly is another's delight

On the way out of the village of Kalyves going west to Kalami there is a sign and arrow to Koumos. This site is worth a visit and is known as 'one man's folly'. A collection of buildings including a taverna and a chapel with a domed roof all built from local small misshapen stones. This eclectic mix of buildings are all made from small rocks and all built by one man over a period of 10 years. There are mosaics on the paths; whilst walls display images of fish, snakes and various animals. There are also stone tables and chairs. If you just want to wander around, take photographs or just be amazed, pop along as there is no admission charge. Look out for the occasional ostrich or even a llama!

No cars in the tiny village of Loutro

Only approached by boat from Hora Sfakia in the south, this amazing tiny village has a simplicity of lifestyle and an incredible beauty untouched by the outside world. It is a town consisting of three rows of white-washed, blue-roofed hotels, restaurants and homes built around the edge of a beautiful bay. There are no tides, but simply long hot days of water, swimming and kayaking. It's probably too far to try for a day trip, but check out the small pensions there and stay overnight - it's magical! There are no cars or motorcycles there, only boats that peacefully come and go from the little town.

Visit Agia Lake
