Location of Casa Rockmorell
Great Things to Do Near Casa Rockmorell
and see where the earliest Menorcans lived.
Go down the steps to the 'Trogloditos' café,
and enjoy a cool drink with the view out to sea, or go later and enjoy an intimate dinner.
Drive to the nearby sandy beach of Algaiarens for sun and sea bathing,
and perhaps follow the nature trail in the woods.
Instead of doing all your shopping in a supermarket,
go to the food market in a side street near the Cathedral. Especially good for fresh fish.
Visit the market held on Friday and Saturday mornings on the main square in Ciutadella.
A good place for buying gifts, or that extra item of clothing you forgot to bring.
Stop on the way in to Ciutadella at the 'Horse' roundabout,
and buy homemade bread and cakes at Ca'n Bep, where you can also sit outside and enjoy a coffee.
Stroll around the old town centre,
taking your street guide with you, and enjoy all the lovely old buildings, especially the Cathedral and the Town Hall.
Do the same thing at night,
and enjoy the lively cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Walk down the 'Paseo de San Nicolas' to the far end,
and visit the old defence tower. Next to it see the statue of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut (yes, that was really his name) who was born of ex-patriot Ciudadellenc parents, and became the first Admiral of the Fleet of the United States.
On the new south ring road, follow signs to Lithica - Pedreres de S'Hostal.
This is the old stone quarry, and is very deep. Follow the pathway around its depths, and look out for the auditorium, where concerts are held from time to time on summer evenings.
Go back in time to the Bronze Age by exploring various prehistoric sites,
especially Sa Naveta des Tudons, the oldest roofed building in Europe.
Drive out of Ciutadella along the main road towards the little town of Ferreries.
Just before the town centre, on the right, take the road leading to Cala Galdana. After about 1.5 km on the left you come to Es Martorellet, where an equestrian show is performed on two evenings per week. This is a chance to see the famous black Menorcan horses performing as at the Fiestas, and much more. Booking advisable.
Carry on down this road to the resort of Cala Galdana,
with its wide sandy beach, and a selection of cafes for lunch.
Lloc de Menorca
For a curious mix of Menorca's indigenous species such as its emblematic red cow and other wild and wonderful creatues, pop along to this working farm/zoo in Alaior, Carretera General.
Starting opposite the Hotel Audax at Cala Galdana,
is a walk through the woods and across fields to the unspoilt beaches of Macarella and Macarelleta, where you can enjoy a swim and sunbathe without cars and hotels.
Drive from Ciutadella to the next town of Ferreries,
which has a small craft market in the town centre on Saturday mornings.
From the roundabout at the edge of Ferreries,
follow the signs to San Patrici, where you can sample and buy their traditionally made cheese, and their own label wine.
The unique leather goods on sale at Inaki Sampedro could potentially ruin your holiday budget! Try the accessories such as purses and mobile phone covers for something a little more gentle on your wallet. Or simply employ the expression: 'solo estoy mirando' (I'm just looking). Situated at 26 Seminari, Ciutadella.
Take a trip to Favaritx
where the landscape takes on a spectacular lunar quality. In contrast to the rugged coastline around the lighthouse, there are 2 beautiful beaches just a short walk along the coast heading south, Presili and Tortuga. These beaches are completely `uncontaminated` by tourist installations so you would need to take all supplies and equipment with you but this also means that the area does not get busy.
Head uphill to Monte Toro
which is squarely in the centre of the Island. The `mountain` is the Island`s highest peak and on a clear day you can enjoy panoramic views from the north coast to the south coast. The monastery is no longer used as such but it is worth saving some time to visit the church before calling into the café for refreshments. Don’t leave without trying the pastissets (similar to shortbread) or the amargos (almond macaroons).
