On Menorca’s beautifully unspoilt north western coast, amidst a picturesque patchwork of gently undulating meadows and farmland, the sea meets the shore via a sheltered inlet at the pretty cove of Cala Morell. Clusters of white painted homes dot the hillside around and above and offer a restful coastal retreat with a village-like ambience that has become so favoured by guests that we see them returning year after year.
It was therefore with delight that we discovered Garbo, a stylish home which faces south towards a verdant backdrop of woodland on a residential lane just 600m from the steps that lead down to the cove itself.
Being the latest creation of its local owners, its clean lines, neutral colour scheme and elegant look are perfectly up-to-the-minute, whilst the high-pitched ceilings that span its light-filled rooms display the juxtaposition of exposed beams and honey-coloured stone that has become such a timeless characteristic of Menorcan architecture.
The four main bedrooms are located off a corridor beyond the living area and these are complemented by an additional single bedroom which sits alongside the kitchen and provides extra capacity and a cleverly incorporated en suite shower cubicle. The heart of this home is however the south-facing living room which flows seamlessly through French windows to a covered outdoor dining terrace. Indoor and outdoor living are perfectly connected here and with barbecue facilities so conveniently to hand and a pleasing choice of poolside lawns and terraces available for lounging, guests may not wish to venture far.
It is nevertheless an easy stroll from Garbo to Cala Morell’s restaurant, which overlooks the water and is just 650m from the house. Just below it is the sheltered cove, where ocean vistas can be enjoyed either from the bay itself or from the levelled rock platforms that lie below the cliffs. All amenities and a mouth-watering choice of restaurants can be found in historic Ciutadella (8km), whilst also not to be missed are the twin sandy beaches that line the rural bay of Algaiarens amidst the beautiful countryside of La Vall, just a 10 minute drive from the house.

Great Things to Do Near Garbo
Walk to Punta Nati
along the Cami de Cavalls. The start of the path is just up the road from the Necropolis and the walk takes just a few hours. Look out for the monument to the General Chanzy, which was a mail ship that sank off the coast there in 1910.
Algaiarens-La Vall
Is just a short drive from Garbo. This area of natural beauty has 2 beaches which are great for swimming and snorkelling and various nature trails through the pine forest. Follow the sign to the `mirador` from the car park for spectacular views.
Explore the south coast by boat
There are daily trips from Cala en Bosch along the south coast to Cala Galdana that call into all of the bays on the way. Lunch is provided on some trips and there are plenty of opportunities for swimming and snorkelling. Alternatively hire a self-drive boat from the beach at Cala Galdana.
Spend a day at the Cap de Cavalleria
An area of natural interest due to the number of archeological remains found there and it's also a bird watchers paradise. The little port here, Sa Nitja, was where the Romans landed when they reached Menorca and the remains of the trading town that grew up around it are still being excavated. Once you have explored the area, relax on the beautiful beach - don`t forget your mask and snorkel.
The highest point on the Island is Monte Toro
A visit here is a must do for anyone holidaying in Menorca. The Island's highest point offers the most fantastic views of the whole Island and even over to Mallorca on a clear day. The mountain is home to the Sanctuary of the Verge de Toro, as well as an excellent cafe/bar and a few gift shops.
Fiestas!!
Ciutadella celebrates its main festival in honour of its Patron Saint, Sant Joan, on the 23 and 24 June. Over the two days, following Minorcan tradition, the town's streets and squares are filled with horses, music, religious ceremonies, hustle and bustle, merry-making and people. Enjoy the lively atmosphere, enjoy a `pomada` or two, dance in the streets and celebrate along with the locals
Take to the sea
and go paddleboarding or kayaking. Trips are available to suit all levels of ability from the beach at Cala Morell.
From the roundabout at the edge of Ferreries
follow the signs to San Patrici, where you can sample and buy their traditionally made cheese, and their own label wine. Whilst there visit the hillside sculpture garden in the St. Patrici farm, a project worked from white marble to mark Menorca's UNESCO Biosphere Reserve award received in 1993
For a change of scenery go to Favaritx
where the landscape takes on a spectacular lunar quality. In contrast to the rugged coastline around the lighthouse, there are 2 beautiful beaches just a short walk along the coast heading south, Presili and Tortuga. These beaches are completely `uncontaminated` by tourist installations so you would need to take all supplies and equipment with you but this also means that the area does not get busy.
Visit Binissues
The `Cami Dels Alocs` road is in between Ciutadella and Ferreries and leads to Binissues, an English style country manor house. Explore the museums and landscaped gardens before having lunch in the excellent restaurant. The views from the dining room are not to be missed.
Explore Ciutadella
Wander around the narrow streets and lanes, stop for coffee or tapas in one of the bars and generally soak up the atmosphere and lose track of time.
Menorca Cathedral
in Ciutadella is worth a visit. Built between 1300 and 1362, it occupies the site of a former mosque and is noted for its wide nave. Visits include a walk around the roof terraces which offer panoramic views over Ciutadella and beyond.
Grab a bargain
at one the weekly markets that are held on Friday and Saturday mornings.
Evening craft markets
are held almost every day by the old city walls and local artisans sell their goods on colourful stalls. There is quite often street entertainment at the same time, which adds to the lovely atmosphere.
Walk along the clifftops to the Punta de S`Escullar
where you will find one of the largest colonies of Cory's Shearwater in the western Mediterranean.
