The picturesque coastal neighbourhood of Binibeca, with its sheltered sandy beach and local amenities has for many years been a favourite port of call on our exploratory trips along Menorca’s southern coastline. It was therefore with delight that we discovered Villa San Cristobal, a cheerful home exuding a bright and contemporary ambience within 550m of the golden sands and only 400m from the nearest restaurant.

Nestling attractively amidst the cluster of houses that line leafy avenues stretching back from the beach, this is without a doubt a convenient location and yet at the same time a pleasing sense of privacy can be enjoyed within the property’s neat grounds thanks to the mature foliage of the trees and shrubs that extends luxuriantly beyond the pool.

Thoughtfully fenced for security, the pool and its surrounding lawn are overlooked by a generously proportioned terrace, partly covered and partly open, and conveniently equipped with an in-built barbecue. Easy access is gained from here, via patio doors, to the recently refurbished interior where a neutral decor of fresh light hues combines successfully with smart contemporary furnishings to create a bright and up-to-date look that is sure to please.

Whilst many happy hours will no doubt be spent in the attractive setting provided by the house and grounds themselves, a gentle stroll down an avenue of similar properties will bring you to the gently curved bay of fine white sands, overlooked on one side by a small beach bar with thatched awnings and parasols. The nearby mini supermarket is just 300m from the house, whilst all amenities and an enticing array of harbour front restaurants can be found just 6km away in the island’s atmospheric capital town of Maó.

Great Things to Do Near Villa San Cristobal

Explore Sant Lluis

This is a charming little town originally founded by the French in the 18th century. Visit the windmill, which has been restored to its former condition and is now a museum open to the public, and perhaps have some traditional 'tapas' in the restaurant La Rueda.

Walk into Punta Prima

and enjoy a leisurely drink and some tapas in one of the beachside bars, whilst watching the sun set over the sea.

Walk into Binibeca Vell

Binibeca Vell was designed by Antonio Sintes Mercadal to resemble a traditional fishing village. The award winning design may be artificial but the maze of narrow streets, whitewashed buildings and Moorish arches are typically Menorcan. There's a good choice of bars and restaurants here plus shops, all in the most picturesque of settings.

Step into the past

with a visit to Trepuco which is just off the road between Sant Lluis and Mao. Walk under the archways and explore the buildings that were once home to the very first Menorcans.

Sant Lluis celebrates its main festival in honour of its Patron Saint over the last weekend in August. Taking place over three days, following Minorcan tradition, the town's streets and squares are filled with horses, music, religious ceremonies, hustle and bustle and much merriment. Enjoy the lively atmosphere, enjoy a `pomada` or two, dance in the streets and celebrate along with the locals.

Make a splash

at the new waterpark at Biniancolla. Opened in 2015, the park has slides and rides to suit the most daring members of the family, plus jacuzzis for those who wish for a more relaxing time.

La Mola

The fortress was constructed between 1848 and 1875 to protect Mahon. It is possible to explore at leisure with the help of an audio guide and map or there are guided tours available in English throughout the summer. La Mola is open from 10am every day except Mondays - call 0034 971 364040 for more information and to book guided tours.

Escape to the country

and walk along the Cami de Cavalls. The stretch between Punta Prima to Alcafar is very pretty with nice views, and is easy underfoot.

Drive down to Mahon harbour side and take a trip on the glass-bottomed boat.

This is the second largest natural harbour in the world - Pearl Harbour is the largest. It is steeped in history, especially from the British occupation, and the boat often stops outside the harbour entrance to see the underwater life through the glass bottom.

Es Grau... a small fishing village on the north coast, not far from Mahon. The sheltered sandy beach and warm shallow seas are ideal for relaxing and are very safe for children. The nearby nature trail winds around the back of the sand dunes, through the woods, and skirts round part of the freshwater lake, the Albufera, which is a bird sanctuary.

Take a trip to Favaritx

where the landscape takes on a spectacular lunar quality. In contrast to the rugged coastline around the lighthouse, there are two beautiful beaches just a short walk along the coast heading south, Presili and Tortuga. These beaches are completely `uncontaminated` by tourist installations so you would need to take all supplies and equipment with you but this also means that the area does not get busy.

Sample the locally made Xoriguer gin

at the 18th century distillery in the port of Mao. Although it is not possible to tour the factory, it is possible to see the enormous copper stills bubbling to produce the spirit. The gin was first distilled in Mao to cater for the tastes of the thousands of soldiers and sailors who were stationed in Menorca when it was under British control in the 18th Century.
