Ca'l Perdiu Vell is a very pretty house sitting in a mature, well stocked garden at the end of a short country track. With impressive views across to the mountains bordering the nearby Roman town of Pollença this lovely location offers very easy access to all amenities and at the same time enjoys an essentially rural and tranquil position. Approaching Aloni for the first time, it seems hidden away above the traditional stone walls that enclose the pretty surrounding garden. A splendid semi-circular pool reflects the history of the original site as a thresher’s circle (as does the Greek name) and the wonderful views vie with an intimate traditional interior for a truly lasting first impression. Comfortable outside terrace furniture ensure that many hours are spent admiring the views of Skala, the countryside and the vivid blue of the Ionian Sea. Enjoying the evening stroll back from a traditional taverna in Antipata (500m), we congratulated ourselves on a super evening, trying local delicacies, accompanied by a robust bottle of local Robola wine. Having the freedom to wander into the village is a definite advantage, whilst cosmopolitan Fiscardo is only 3km with shops, tavernas and bars centred around the harbour. Anestis is in the heart of the Erissos peninsula, the woodlands, terraced vine groves and crumbling Venetian houses making walking and exploring a delight.

Situated at the bottom of a private road, surrounded by rolling hills sprinkled with firs, pines and olive trees, this impressive four-bedroom villa is spacious both inside and out. The kitchen is well appointed and each bedroom is very stylishly decorated with traditional wrought iron beds, air conditioning, a private balcony or terrace and an en suite bath or shower room.

The nearest taverna is a convenient 600m away and it is just a 4km drive down to the bright lights of Skala itself where a large selection of supermarkets, restaurants, internet cafes and bars await. Wide, predominantly sandy and stretching for 3km, Skala’s Blue Flagged beach is considered one of the best on Kefalonia. It is also home to a water sports centre offering a range of activities for adult and child alike.

Nearby Katelios (7km) is a laid back coastal village popular for its choice of beachside seafood restaurants where the selection of charcoal-grilled lobster, fish and prawn dishes changes regularly according to what has been freshly caught. Boats can often be hired here for exploring the coastline in search of deserted coves or sailing around to the famous beach of Mounda where a conservation centre has been established for the endangered Caretta-Caretta turtles.

Continuing north, Lourdas Beach and Trapezaki Beach are both well worth a visit, as is the island’s lively capital Argostoli, a bustling town with a colourful waterfront, vibrant central square and several interesting historical landmarks.

Tucked away above Katelios Valley, this attractive house boasts a marvellous location with eye catching views of the tiny harbour and the stretch of sandy beach that hugs the coastline. The blueness of the Ionian Sea dazzles and in the distance Mounda Beach can also be seen.

Katelios is one of the most delightful villages in Kefalonia. The fresh seafood dishes served in the beachside tavernas (1km) are renowned as being amongst the best on the island and it is all too easy for a leisurely lunch to last long into the afternoon. The gently sloping sandy beach (1km) is unspoilt and lapped by clear shallow water that is great for snorkelling and especially popular with young families while the easy layout of the harbour front is perfect for an evening promenade.
