Mention St-Émilion and images of vineyards, a glass of rich, velvety Bordeaux, and a magical town of golden stone may spring to mind. Imagine our delight, then, when we visited Château Lalande, a small and perfectly formed château just 15 minutes from St-Émilion, deep in the heart of this glorious region. Forming part of the owner’s wine domaine, it is truly something special…
This is a château on a wonderfully intimate scale, and all the better for it, making it somehow more enjoyable and relaxing. The scene is set with an impressive drive, which leads gracefully to the beautifully proportioned property. Step into an elegant hallway which runs from one side to the other, drawing the eye through to the surrounding vineyards. Double doors open into two living rooms, a dining room and stylish kitchen with bespoke carpentry. Throughout, the sophisticated neutral colour palette is the perfect backdrop to an eclectic mix of furniture, objets d’art and paintings, creating interiors that feel considered and characterful without ever being overly formal.
A curved staircase leads to the first floor, home to three en suite bedrooms, all beautifully decorated and with fabulous views, with two further en suite bedrooms on the second floor. The principal bedroom is the most spacious, with its own dressing area and exquisite fitted wardrobes — you really will want to unpack the suitcase! But whichever bedroom you choose, we are sure you will be delighted. Each has its own character and a wonderful sense of quiet individuality, while retaining the relaxed charm that makes Château Lalande feel so immediately welcoming.
Outside, a pristine lawn merges into vineyards, with the stylish pool positioned to one side to create the perfect area for outdoor relaxation. Tall, mature trees provide a shady backdrop and there are separate seating and dining terraces, ready for long lazy poolside days and evenings.
The surrounding area is home to a wonderful selection of wineries and restaurants, not least in the UNESCO listed town of Saint-Emilion (9km). Fabulous Bordeaux, itself a UNESCO Word Heritage destination, can easily be reached by train from nearby Libourne (6km), a town well worth exploring in its own right. And for something a little different, visit St Pardon on the Dordogne to watch (or join?) surfers riding Le Mascaret. This rare tidal bore sends waves surging upriver and makes for a spectacular sight - a glorious lineup of surfers, canoers and kayakers all catching the waves.
Beautifully intimate, effortlessly elegant and surrounded by some of the world’s most celebrated vineyards, Château Lalande captures everything we love about this enchanting corner of France.

- The chateau is part of the owner’s wine domaine, with vineyards surrounding the property. In the grounds, to one side, is the cave, where the wine is stored. You may be aware of some activity but the staff are very discreet. They can organise a private wine tasting and tour for you.
- Double/twin bedrooms can be prepared as either. Please advise at time of booking.
