About Portugal

About Portugal

Situated at the western end of Iberia where the land ends and the sea begins, Portugal has so much to offer: a dramatic shoreline of stunningly unspoilt beaches, quaint fishing villages, medieval walled towns, castles galore, vineyards producing exquisite local wines, and charming people from whom a warm welcome can always be assured. The two regions we feature offer distinct landscapes and their own unique personalities.

In the north-western corner, local life evolves in a delightfully unhurried way in the stone villages, lush wooded landscape and sandy shores of the Costa Verde.  We are one of the principal villa operators to the Costa Verde, a region of quaint villages, virgin forests and miles of pristine beaches. Our portfolio in the Costa Verde includes picturesque stone cottages, restored manor houses and larger, historic quintas.

Occupying the southernmost province, bustling resorts and charming fishing villages can be found along the Algarve's dramatic shoreline, whilst typical villages and traditional market towns nestle amongst the almond groves that cover the hillsides above.  On the Algarve, with its sandy beaches and year-round sunshine, we offer an enviable selection of houses, all with a private pool.

Beaches

Portugal's coastline is a paradise for beach lovers, offering some of the most stunning and serene beaches in Europe. The turquoise waters and gentle sands here are perfect for relaxation, water sports, and soaking up the sun.

Nestled in the southern part of Portugal, the Algarve is renowned for its breathtaking beaches. Praia da Marinha is a hidden gem known for its stunning limestone cliffs, famous 'M' rock, and crystal-clear waters, often featured in advertisements for the Algarve. Another notable beach, Praia da Falésia, boasts dramatic red and golden cliffs, fine sand, and calm waters, making it ideal for families. For adventurers, Praia de Benagil is famous for the Benagil Sea Cave, accessible by boat or kayak. You can take a boat tour to the cave, enjoying the stunning rock formations and clear waters along the way.

Heading north, the beaches of the Costa Verde and Minho offer lush green surroundings and tranquil waters. Praia do Moledo, located near the Spanish border, is a favourite for its natural beauty and great surfing conditions. The views of the surrounding mountains and the nearby fort add to its charm. Known for its long stretch of sand and powerful waves, Praia de Afife is a top spot for surfers. It's also a great place to relax and enjoy the scenic beauty of the Minho coastline. For a more family-friendly option, Praia de Vila Praia de Âncora offers calm waters and a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a peaceful day by the sea with plenty of amenities nearby.

The Regions of Portugal - Where to Stay

Portugal is packed with holiday destinations, each with its own unique charm. But let's hone in on two particularly enchanting regions: the Algarve and Costa Verde & Minho. These areas are known for their stunning landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality, making them perfect for a memorable holiday.

our destinations in portugal

Blessed with a year-round balmy climate, boasting over 3000 hours of sunshine and famed for an alluring coastline of dune backed beaches, sheltered rocky coves and high wind-swept cliffs, it is little wonder Portugal’s southernmost province is one of Europe’s finest holiday destinations.

That’s not to say that the Algarve is all about beaches! There are many layers to this fascinating region –  from the high fertile hills of the Serra da Monchique to the calming lagoon waters of the Ria Formosa, this is a land where time worn traditions and customs are deeply embedded in daily life; where fresh produce and flavoursome seafood is in abundance and where visitors are welcomed with a kind spirit and a friendly smile.

When the only traffic jam is caused by a horse drawn cart laden with the grape harvest, or a black clad old lady ushering her herd of goats, a meander along the blissfully unspoilt rural byways of Costa Verde and Minho cannot fail to be relaxing.

The countryside is a rich patchwork of maize fields and vineyards, with green vines atop tall granite pergolas shading spindly cabbages below and traditional wigwam shaped corn stacks dominating the landscape. Women, heads held high with produce, make their way to and from the fields, or from the river banks where the age old ritual of clothes washing and companionship takes place in defiance of modern technology.
