Nestled in the picturesque countryside not far from the pretty bastide of Lalinde on the banks of the River Dordogne, Le Clos des Chênes is one of the most beautifully restored farmhouses and its setting one of the most restful we have come across. This late 17th Century property, built of the local honey coloured stone, is surrounded by mature grounds of garden and woodland and is, in our opinion, an ideal place to recharge your batteries and enjoy a relaxing holiday with family and friends.
From the moment you enter the grounds, you will be impressed with the quality and space of the property. The grounds cover 1.5 hectares, with plenty of spots for everyone: shady areas under trees, expanses of garden and quiet nooks in corners. Forming a U shape around the central garden are three lovely stone buildings: La Maison Principale, classic in style, accommodating the main living areas and four bedrooms; a 17th Century tobacco barn; and a restored barn (originally the pig sty) which is now home to two bedrooms, each with their own terrace.
And behind the classic exteriors, you will discover accommodation that is testament to the owners’ careful restoration and attention to detail. Full of character and authenticity, the rooms feature original stonework, wood beams and traditional tiling, beautiful backdrops to squashy sofas, exquisite items of furniture, interesting artwork and quality fittings. Each of the bedrooms is individually designed and decorated – the only difficult decision will be which one to choose!
Ideally located just outside the kitchen is the dining terrace, where natural shade is provided by a mature oak tree. From here, follow the path to the pool, enclosed by hedges to create a defined spot for swimming and relaxing, where lounging by the pool, taking a dip, and keeping cool on the covered terrace will be the order of the day.
Holiday plans often include exploration of the local area and you will find no end of places to visit from Le Clos des Chênes. Pretty riverside villages and towns (Trémolat 8km, Limeuil 15km, Le Bugue 17km) offer stunning views, water based activities and restaurants. Discover the glorious chateaux and gardens for which the Dordogne is famous, and explore fascinating caves such as the Gouffre de Proumeyssac and the archaeological site at Les Eyzies (30 minute drive).
However, we have a feeling that you may forget your plans to explore and, with just the occasional foray into Lalinde (15 minute drive) for supplies, simply succumb to the charms and tranquil atmosphere of Le Clos des Chênes.
- Le Studio and La Petite Chambre: each can be accessed independently but there is also an interconnecting door between Le Studio's living area and La Petite Chambre's bathroom.
- Parties paying the Small Party Rate (up to 8 people) have use of the Main House only.
- Please note that there is a local tourist tax to pay: £2.10 per night for guests aged 18 and over.
