Beaches and ocean, forest and lakes meet in perfect harmony in this much sought after area south of Bordeaux, known as ‘Bisca Grands Lacs’. Golden sandy beaches line the Atlantic coast as far as the eye can see, walking and cycling trails criss-cross the tranquil verdant pine forests whilst the three ‘Grands Lacs’ offer that tantalising combination of water sports, beaches and swimming alongside vibrant villages and small marinas. And it was in one such town, Parentis-en-Born, on the edge of Lac de Biscarrosse that we came across Maison de la Côte, within walking distance (1.3km) of the centre with its restaurants and shops, and the ideal base from which to explore this fascinating area.

A deep hedge encloses established gardens to the front and rear of Maison de la Côte. Table tennis and pétanque are added attractions for children (and adults!) and a large, decked terrace links the house to the pool, creating a lovely spot for dining and relaxing.

Further dining space can be found in the sunroom to one side, where patio doors allow the outside in. The interior is tastefully decorated, with a cosy living room and three bedrooms, each with its own colour theme.

Home to shops, restaurants and a weekly market, Parentis is proud of its Landaise heritage, celebrating in style during August when the town holds its ‘féria’. The lake is a 10 minute drive away (easily accessible by bike too). The charm of the small lakeside beaches and shallow waters will not fail but if you seek impressive waves, vast expanses of sand and big skies, there are plenty of spots along the Atlantic Coast, including Biscarrosse Plage (20km) and Mimizan Plage (30km). And for something completely different, take the train from Ychoux (11km) and 50 minutes later you will be in the heart of Bordeaux, ready to soak up the atmosphere of this elegant city.

The Basque Country and Spain

Why not explore a little further south?  Easily accessible by taking the A63, the Basque Country with its glorious countryside and interesting villages and towns is just under 2hrs away.  Explore Bayonne with its half timbered houses, St Jean de Luz on the coast, Espelette famous for its dried red peppers (you will see them hung up to dry outside the shops and houses in the village).  Take your passport and continue over the border into Spain and the wonderful coastal town of San Sebastian (2hrs).

A day or two or three or more at the beach!

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches.  From the sandy beaches around Lac de Biscarrosse to the kilometres of long sandy beaches that run the length of the coast, you can take your pick.  Biscarrosse Plage is popular – a vast expense of sand, choice of amenities and activities.  Relax with a book or watch the surfers catching the waves, you can even have a go yourself with lessons at the local surf school.

Ychoux and Bordeaux

Head a few kilometres east to Ychoux, a lovely little village, surrounded by forest.  Visit the Arboretum with its walking trails through the trees.  Ychoux also has a train station, so why not catch the train in the morning and spend the day in the wonderful city of Bordeaux?
