Maison Ochre is a very special, authentic village farmhouse renovated with great care and attention to detail, located within a 5 minute walk of a typical village with 3 cafés and restaurants, a well known bakery and grocers offering a variety of local products.

The house is situated at the end of a quiet, narrow road on the edge of the village, just past a beautiful XVII century castle. Enjoy the comforts of space and privacy inside and out whilst experiencing a true Provençal village atmosphere. A huge old mulberry tree welcomes you at the entrance of the property, a majestic natural feature between the main house and the separate garden pool area. Beside the house is a large, sheltered terrace, a peaceful and comfortable place to relax in the shade, where guests will enjoy long apéritifs, lunches and dinners. There are further terraces in the compact garden to enjoy at different times of the day. The spacious pool area boasts a large pool and fenced garden. This area is a real treat, complete with comfortable sun loungers and plenty of sun or shade in the covered seating area, depending on your preference.

The renovation has cleverly combined modern comforts and authentic local materials - stone, beams and ironwork - to create a unique village house with feature views, an interesting layout and with a focus on its original features including a covered well and authentic wine cellar. The large living area has ample seating for all guests to enjoy and the four bedrooms with open en suite facilities are a delight.

There are views of the neighbouring hills and several hiking trails start right from the house, with one leading to the dramatic 'Colorado Provençal' trail known for its spectacular ochre coloured landscape. Nearby Gordes (26km) and Roussillon (19km) offer further amenities and wine lovers will enjoy touring and tasting the locally produced Luberon wines in this lovely part of Provence. Marseille airport is a 90km drive.

  • Access to the property is via the narrow streets of the town suitable for small cars only. There is parking available at the property but large and/or wide vehicles will need to be parked at the entrance to the town, approx 5 mins walk.

Great Things to Do Near Maison Ochre

Drive along the country roads that go up and over the Plateau de Vaucluse

to Sault, famous for its lavender fields. Go at the beginning of July to see the area awash in the colour purple, or go on 15th August for the Fete de Lavande, held in Sault itself.

The villages of Oppède Le Vieux, Ménerbes and Lacoste

Set against a backdrop of craggy limestone hills, these restored three villages are extremely pretty and always bustling. You reach Oppède le Vieux on foot, leaving your car in the parking space below the village. Narrow pathways lead up to the 12th century castle at the very top of the steep rocky outcrop on which the village is built. The drive between Oppède and Ménerbes is lovely, with vineyards on either side. Wander the little streets of Ménerbes with its mixture of pastel coloured and stone houses, and pop in and out of the chic boutiques you will find there. The final village in the trio, Lacoste, is probably the most attractive, perhaps due to the fact that it is less restored than the others, and in part to the fabulous views it has over the valley. During the 18th century its castle was home to the Marquis de Sade.

Visit Roussillon

... home to rock formations, and the most vivid red hued soil you will have ever seen. The colours span the spectrum of reds, oranges and yellows and are truly amazing. The village itself is a delight to wander around with its arty shops and lovely cafés.

Visit Apt on a Saturday for the weekly market

or between April and October on a Tuesday morning too. Once you are stocked up on fresh fruit, bread, olives, have lunch in one of the many cafés.

A breath of fresh air!

Lovers of the great outdoors will feel spoilt - the Luberon is a magnificent region for walking and hiking, cycling, and spotting all sorts of flora and fauna.

Wine tasting

The local vignerons often attend markets, and offer tastings on the spot. Or you can visit a nearby vineyard directly to taste and purchase some fabulous wine at really competitive prices. Most of these wines are not imported into the UK, so it's great to see what else is out there.

Lourmarin, in the Grand Luberon,

is a very pretty village, dominated by its chateau. Visit the chateau or explore the narrow streets lined with art galleries, cafes, and craft shops. Try the local sweet snack called gibassier which is a sweet cookie made with olive oil, shaped like an oval leaf and about a foot long.

Have a day out in Avignon,

the capital of the Vaucluse. Head for the car park called 'Parking Palais des Papes'. This underground car park is underneath the Palais des Papes square and so when you surface, you greeted with an awe inspiring view of the Palais itself.

Visit a lavender distillery

The Luberon is renowned for its lavender fields. If you would like to learn about how it is processed, you could visit the 'Les Agnels' distillery just outside of Apt. Guided tours are available in July and August.

Play a round of Golf

The 9-hole Golf des Ocres was opened in 2024 in lovely countryside near the village of Villars. Also within the 'Domaine des Hautes Garrigues' site is a restaurant and pro shop. 

Walk through the ochre landscape

Accessed from Rustrel, the ‘Colorado Provençal’ is a range of hills and former ochre quarries crossed by well-marked footpaths. Look out for the ‘fairy chimneys’, a river of sand, and various other striking formations caused by the quarrying. Keep your camera at the ready, to take stunning pictures of the vivid hues and surreal landscape.

A family cycle ride

If you have brought or rented bikes, why not cycle part of the Véloroute du Calavon, a former railway track which has been developed into a dedicated cycle path. Mostly flat, it is safe and easy for most abilities. It stretches between Apt and Cavaillon, with panoramic views of Luberon hilltop villages, lavender fields and orchards.
