Just 300m from the small hamlet of Riba de Âncora, we stepped through the entrance gates of Casa das Camelias and found ourselves in a beautifully tended garden, looking out across an expansive lawn dotted with mature trees, flowering shrubs and the colourful camelias after which the house is named. The undulating tops of nearby hills formed a restful backdrop beyond and when we realised that we were only an 8 minute drive from the golden sands and seafront restaurants of Vila Praia de Âncora we were in no doubt that this charming stone cottage would soon become a firm favourite with guests.

Forming the focal point of this prettiest of gardens is the swimming pool. Directly accessed on one side by the charming French doors that adjoin the living room and bedrooms of the property’s south facing facades, and overlooked on the other by an enticing outdoor living area and games room, it is ideally positioned for relaxed holiday living.

Inside too, the delightful country-cottage interior will instantly welcome with its homely ambience and a charming décor featuring open stone walls, pretty upholstery and the eye-catching ceilings of vaulted wood that are so typical of country homes in the Minho. Designed by the owners for their own weekends and holidays away from the city, the spacious open plan living area offers an abundance of soft seating and a dining table alongside the kitchen area for sociable meals and gatherings, whilst the French doors that line two of its walls provide easy access to the garden and pool.

Whilst Casa das Camelias enjoys a scenic rural setting amidst the pretty cobbled lanes, vineyards and orchards of this picturesque corner of Portugal, its proximity to the coast makes it an ideal base for those wishing to spend time on the long sandy beaches of the Costa Verde. Just 4.8km away in the charming fishing town of Vila Praia de Âncora meals can be enjoyed whilst looking out to sea, the catch of the day can be bought for dinner on the barbecue and it is here that the nearest supermarkets are also to be found.
