An immediate sense of grandeur was apparent as we stepped through the tall wooden doors of this elegant country home and found ourselves in an impressive stone-flagged entrance hall, looking up at its lofty wood panelled ceiling and an eye-catching staircase of beautifully restored ancient stone. At the same time, we were struck by the unquestionable appeal of its location since the spacious grounds and rural surroundings of Casa do Moinho are only 6km from the sandy beaches, waterfront eateries and lively town centre of Esposende

Amidst a picturesque landscape of fields and woodland, at the end of an unmade country lane, the extensive lawned grounds spread out like an idyllic oasis beyond a generously proportioned pool and spacious outdoor dining terrace. Encircled by a lush canopy of mature trees on three sides, with the restful sound of a nearby stream trickling in the background, they provide a wonderful retreat for those seeking a natural setting within a short drive of the beach.

Having been restored and extended by its current owners, this is a home that exudes character and style. On the ground floor, an occasional low doorway calls to mind its ancient origins; the original kitchen retains its traditional hearth in what now serves as a cosy anti-room alongside its up-to-date counterpart; in the impressively spacious living room classically styled furniture has been carefully positioned to look out through patio doors onto the grounds. Upstairs, on the floor that was added to the original building, a smart landing of polished wood floors provides access to the bedrooms whilst at the same time looking down onto the entrance hall below.

The result is a successful fusion of old and new in an elegant residence amidst the scenic countryside that stretches back beyond the coast. It offers an ideal retreat for restful days at home, whilst at the same time being just a 10 minute drive from the sandy beaches, waterfront promenade and attractive town centre of Esposende. Even closer to hand are the amenities within the village (1.1km) which include a local shop, restaurant, café and bakery.

  • The unmade country lane that provides access to the property is narrow in places and is therefore not suitable for wide cars.
