Nearby Santa Caterina da Fonte do Bispo (2.3km) provides basic amenities with a couple of restaurants, a mini-market, a tempting café / bakery and is also home to the renowned kilns producing Santa Caterina tiles, many of which adorn terraces and swimming pool surrounds across the Algarve. A short drive through rolling hills and forests of eucalyptus down to the coast brings travellers to charming Tavira (15km), on the banks of the meandering River Gilao and home to gracious riverside mansions and an impressive 11km island beach. Further afield, a visit taking in the charms of Faro’s old quarter replete with time worn cobbled streets, pretty squares and an array of tempting eateries for all tastes and pockets, is a must.

Great Things to Do Near Laranjeira

Try a Salt Spa

at Castro Marim. Experience floating salt water whilst covered in detoxing muds, relax on the sun loungers then rinse off and enjoy a lovely drink in the open air relaxation area. Local salts and produce are available to buy. A very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.

The delightful town of Tavira is well worth exploring

as it is considered by some to be the most charming town in the region. It is sited on two sides of the River Gilão and spanned by an elegant Roman bridge. As you wander around the narrow cobbled streets, take note of the portas de reixa, which are Moorish style lattice panelled doors.

For a day out with a difference

visit the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, which stretches along 37 miles of coastline east of Faro from Olhao to Tavira. It was created to protect the ecosystem of the area and is an important breeding area for wetland birds.

Santa Luzia is known as the octopus capital of the Algarve

testament to which are the hundreds of covos, or pots, that can be seen stacked by the quay, ready to be used. Needless to say, the day’s catch features quite prominently on the menus of the local restaurants. 

Explore the attractive local town of Loulé

and witness craftsmen at work in many traditions such as copper, tin, brass and wrought iron mainly in the streets around where the market is held. Other items manufactured locally are shoes, cane furniture, pottery, wax candles and harnesses. Many a fascinating hour can be spent watching the craftsmen plying their trade.

Spend a day at Zoomarine

one of the biggest attractions on Algarve. It is both a theme park, Aquarium and there are water shows with dolphins, seals and sea lions to entertain all ages. Located on the EN125 at Guia. www.zoomarine.com

The castle town of Silves is worth spending a day exploring.

The Cathedral, built in red stone, and the Moorish castle both offer beautiful views over the orange and almond groves below.   

Learn about the traditions of the area

visit the 'Museu do Traje' museum in Sao Bras de Alportel which houses a collection of traditional Algarve clothing throughout history, showcases local traditions and also provides an exhibition on the local cork producing industry.

The village of Estoi

is famous for its Roman ruins at Milreu dating from the 2nd Century. They are about a 10 minute walk out of the village. The 19th Century Estoi Palace and Gardens, now a 5 star hotel are also well known and attract visitors to see the ornamental fountains and the blue and white Portuguese tiled terraces.

Take a boat trip!

Trips leave from Albufeira, Vilamoura Marina, Faro, Olhao and Tavira to the different beaches and the Islands. It is also possible to charter a yacht from Vilamoura Marina and enjoy a day sailing around the beautiful coastline. 

Explore the town of Olhao

one of the most important fishing ports along this coast. The town once had close trade links with North Africa which is reflected in shape of the town's cube-shaped houses with flat roofs and external staircases. Reward yourself with a fantastic lunch of the day's catch at one of the many waterfront fish restaurants.

Go to Spain!

It is worth taking a trip to the border with Spain at Vila Real de Santo Antonio, on the banks of the river Guadiana, which forms the border with Spain and nearby explore the twin castles of Castro Marim which were strategically placed to protect the settlement for many centuries.
