Spacious, stylishly appointed and well laid out for family living, Cavall Bernat sits just a few minutes stroll from the sandy shores of Cala Barques, one of the two bays that form this small locality whilst an easy wander will recompense with a handful of restaurants, cafes and a local store for those last minute essentials. For the more adventurous, a cluster of walking trails branch out from the garden gate meandering up the Cavall Bernat Ridge in the foothills of the Tramuntana Mountain Range.

The charming cove of Cala San Vicenç lies at the head of a deep natural inlet creating a magnet for small sailing boats during summer months, as its clear turquoise waters and dramatic mountain back drop with country trails attract a combination of walkers, foodies and those seeking a quieter corner to soak up the sun or try their hand at snorkelling to the tantalizing aroma of fresh fish sizzling on a grill nearby.

Consisting of attractive enclosed gardens with a sizeable, freeform design pool, adjacent Jacuzzi and covered chill out area Cavall Bernat ticks all the right boxes. Spacious sun terraces with mountain and sea views will have you spoilt for choice whilst claiming a sunny spot or shady recess as the mood dictates. The east facing terrace is furnished with an extra-large table providing space for the entire group to congregate, basking in the sea breeze that provides respite from the midday sun and a games room for those who manage to combat the temptation of having a siesta.

The large, wooden door of the main house opens into a light, bright and airy sitting area with large TV, comfortable seating and vibrant coloured paintings lining the walls to add that splash of panache. A short passage leads to a well-equipped kitchen complete with industrial gas hob, pantry, utility room and separate dining area, opening out onto a side terrace, so you can rustle up a coffee and croissant in the morning and slip out poolside, without disturbing anyone. Two bedrooms are also situated on this level (1 twin, 1 double) both with en suite facilities and mountain views.

The upper level is reached via stairs leading from the sitting area, revealing two further double bedrooms both with en suite facilities and extensive sea views - one also has a private balcony.

A fifth bedroom is accessed from the large sun terrace providing a certain amount of independence for its occupants, whilst following a small garden path that dips down to a lower level, a discreet terrace shared by two more bedrooms offers refuge from the hustle and bustle of the hub of activity taking place in the main house.

Just a short drive from the more upbeat areas of Pollenca and its port, this location concedes to convert your holiday time to be as relaxed or invigorating as you decide and the idyllic layout of this gem makes the perfect choice for a family travelling with grandparents or with older children who’d like to feel more independent – when everyone has their own space, it makes shared time in the communal areas even more of a pleasure.

Explore the old town of Pollença

Stroll around the old town of Pollença. It's definitely worth making the effort to climb the 365 steps up to the Calvary church and browsing in the curious little shops before sitting down to relax with a drink and dinner in one of the many popular restaurants in the pedestrianised squares.

Nearby Beaches

Playa de Muro and Port de Pollenca are two lovely beaches in the North of the island which can be reached by car in just a few minutes. A little further afield is the renowned beach of Formentor.

The only water park in the north of Mallorca

is Hidropark in Alcúdia. Open 1st May to 30th October. www.hidroparkalcudia.com.

Go to the market

Pollença market on Sunday morning is a colourful bustling event where you can buy your locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as a few souvenirs and presents. Have a look inside the church which is very impressive.

Old Roman town of Alcúdia

Tuesday market in Old Alcúdia is interesting and has a plentiful supply of locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables, then just stroll round the pedestrianised old Roman town where caper plants are growing out of the main massive thick stone walls surrounding the town. The local council offer a free guided tour around the historical centre of Alcúdia old town on Wednesdays and Fridays during the summer months.

Early morning walk to the top

Just past the rooster roundabout on the main road from Pollenca to Palma on the left, is the start of the walk up to the top of Puig de Maria. It's best to go first thing in the morning wearing sensible shoes. Don't forget your camera and bottle of water although there is a bar at the top. The views over the north coast are outstanding.

Palma de Mallorca, an interesting capital city

There are many interesting historical buildings to visit in Palma, including the Cathedral, Almudaina Palace and Bellver Castle, as well as museums and art galleries. Palma is also an excellent shopping centre.

Visit a local vineyard

There are several vineyards in Mallorca where you can visit and try the wine - Vinyes Mortitx is on the road to Pollenca-Lluc roat at KM 10;9; Bodegues Maciá Batle is at the entrance to Santa Maria on the main road towards Consell; and in Binissalem is the better-known Bodega José L. Ferrer. No visits dueing the grape harvest in September although the wine festival in Binissalem is worth joining in.

Formentor beach and lighthouse

A scenic drive will take you to Formentor Lighthouse - the road is quite narrow in places. At the top of the hill out of Port de Pollença, it is worth stopping at the viewpoint to see El Colomer rock. Although the beach at Formentor is not very large, it has clear shallow water ideal for children and adults alike, with some good waters for snorkelling. Go early, with a picnic.

Caves of Campanet

The beautiful Caves of Campanet, found by a shepherd about 100 years ago, are not too far away and worth a visit to see the fascinating stalagmite and stalactite formations. These caves are not too commercialised and visits are on the hour. For the most impressive caves, go to Portocristo on the east coast and visit the Caves of Drach which houses one of the largest underground lakes in Europe.

Visit another island - Menorca!

Menorca is just 25 miles away, it is a great island to explore with lots of undeveloped coves. Mahón, the capital, and Cuitadella have beautiful architecture and excellent waterfront restaurants. Daily ferry from Cala Ratjada to Cuitadella.

Play a round of golf!

Mallorca has a great variety of golf courses and the closest to Puerto Pollença is the 9-hole course at Pollença. Alcanada has an 18-hole course with beautiful views overlooking the Bay of Alcúdia.

The old ruined castle at Alaró

Make your way to the top of Castell d'Alaró - take water to drink as the last part of the journey has to be done on foot. The views from the top are breathtakingly beautiful! On the way down enjoy a meal at the Restaurant Es Verger where they serve tasty roast lamb done in a traditional Mallorcan oven.

The battle of the Moors and Christians

Pollenca is famous for its simulated battle of the Moors and the Christians which takes place on 01-02 August. The whole town takes part in the celebrations.

Snorkelling at Mal Pas

If you are keen on snorkelling, go towards Alcúdia then turn off towards the La Victoria headland until you reach Mal Pas. Beside a fish restaurant serving lobster (choose your own), there is an excellent area off the rocks for snorkelling in deep clear water.

Local boat trips

Boat trips from the local coves and ports can make a lovely day or half day out from Port de Pollenca or Port d'Alcudia going to Formentor or around the Headlands.
