Explore Cala Morell
Cala Morell, just a short drive from Ciutadella, is a quiet and tastefully designed residential area built in amongst pine woods which allow villas in the area to retain a peaceful and private setting. The sandy beach has many bathing platforms built around the striking cove which is considered to be one of the best places on the island to go snorkelling and diving. Walks around the cliff tops offer some spectacular views of Menorca's rugged north coast as well as views into the bay where it is possible to see the sea bed as the water is so clear.
Historic settlements
The remains of a pre-talayotic settlement can be found on the headland, but the necropolis, set in a gully at the back of the beach is fascinating to visit. Formed of 14 artificial caves carved into the bare rock, it was used as a cemetery from the middle bronze age right up to the second century and it is considered to be one of the most important archeaological sites on the island. Some of the caves have interior columns, external patios and relief carvings around the entrance.
Beaches and outdoor activities
The 'La Vall' nature reserve is made up of pine forests, cliffs, lagoons, meadows and cultivated farm land and this provides the perfect back drop to Cala Algaiarens where two stunning virgin beaches with fine golden sand can be found. The beaches are a little unusual in that access is easier than many of the other Menorcan virgin beaches which means that they are a perfect place for the whole family to be at one with nature.
Horses are very much at the centre of Menorcan culture and there are riding stables all over the island with one of the most famous located nearby. It caters for riders of all abilities and you can enjoy rides through La Vall and down to the beaches.
Eating out
Cala Morell has a handful of bars serving home cooked snacks and tapas. The beach bar offers some of the most stunning views to take in whilst enjoying one of their famous cocktails and the little bar at the entrance to Cala Morell is ideal for breakfast as it sells a range of locally baked pastries and breads, which can also be brought to take away.
