About Maleme

The Beaches

Maleme is lovely if you are looking for a relaxing day on the beach.  There are actually two beaches: one has sand, sun loungers and water sports; the other is a shingle beach with less going on but with plenty of pine trees offering some shade.

Waterpark

The Aqua Creta water park at Limnoupolis is perfect for a day out with the family.  Just 18km from Maleme, the park offers everything from giant slides and a huge pool to childen’s playgrounds, with a range of facilities including sun beds and parasols, a pool bar and snack bar.  Open mid May to end September.

Chania Town

The lovely town of Chania is about 20km from Maleme.  Explore its Venetian harbour, interesting streets and shops, historical sites and museums.

Ancient Olive Tree

Approximately 20 minutes’ drive South from Maleme, Vouves is home to an ancient olive tree, claimed to be amongst the top five oldest olive trees in the world, estimated to be several thousands of years old.  Next door is a taverna where you can enjoy a drink and admire the view, a museum with free entry is on the site.  A nice place to visit perhaps on your way back to Maleme after a day out.

The Battle of Crete

Famous for being the place where the German paratroopers attacked Crete in 1941, each year Maleme hosts a memorial to remember this.  There is usually an air show, battle re-enactment on the beach and the laying of wreaths.
