The Battle of Scannagallo
In 1554, the Battle of Scannagallo took place here, a conflict that opened the doors of Siena to Florence and helped shape Tuscany as we know it today. Each year between May and June, the village brings this history to life through a detailed re-enactment involving over 300 participants in period costume. The event includes a historical trek following the original troop route from Foiano to Pozzo, with mock assaults and battle demonstrations.
The re-enactment
Beyond the daytime battles, the festivities extend into the evening with a mercenaries' field dinner and displays by flag-wavers. The scale and commitment of the re-enactment reflect the village's dedication to preserving this significant moment in regional history.
The surrounding area
The village's rural Valdichiana setting places it near other notable destinations. The medieval hill town of Lucignano, with its well-preserved historic centre, and the hamlet of Fontelunga both lie within easy reach.
