On the official ‘most beautiful villages in France’ list, Castelnau-de-Montmiral is a little hilltop bastide with a mix of half-timbered and stone houses, and arched arcades around the main square. The surrounding countryside is delightful, particularly along the Tarn river, and all around Gaillac where rows of vines produce highly regarded wines.
