Did we also mention that it is only a 5 minute drive from the bastide town of Duras, where enticing cafes and shops sit alongside the impressive chateau?

The architect designed house is cleverly angled around the pool and terraces and with many of the rooms featuring French windows, there is a real sense of indoor/outdoor living. The wrap around terrace, with wisteria draped pergola with square set pillars, has plenty of space for dining and relaxing overlooking the striking pool. Lavender and roses, trees and shrubs perfectly frame this most inviting of spaces, whilst the rest of the grounds is given over to lawn. Head up past the pool to take in the views towards Duras.

The sense of inside/outside living is enhanced by the soothing palette of colours used throughout the interior and the seamless flow of the layout, with arches leading through to each room. Elegantly furnished, the living and dining rooms have double height ceilings. Bedrooms are equally inviting: a double bedroom sits at one end of the house, with two further bedrooms at the opposite end, all have en suite facilities and the all important access to the wonderful terrace.

From Villa des Colombes’ elevated position, follow the road to Duras, where, during the summer, the Château hosts events such as ‘Son et Lumière’ and medieval tournaments. This lovely town is also home to a selection of cafes and amenities, a weekly market on Mondays and a ‘Maison des Vins’. Head to Marmande and Ste Foy la Grande for shopping, perhaps stopping at Ste Foy la Grande for an afternoon on the river (canoeing, kayaking, swimming). Explore the surrounding bastide villages, each one with its own characteristics and weekly market. Forays further afield reveal St Emilion and Bordeaux, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the glorious long sandy beaches of the Atlantic Coast.

Great Things to Do Near Villa des Colombes

Nearby Duras

Only a 5 minute drive from Villa des Colombes, this small town has interesting little streets, good shops and sunny café terraces plus an impressive château. Built in the 14th century as a fortress originally, it was later transformed into a stately home at the end of the 16th century. The view from the tower over the Dropt valley is splendid and they have special evening events in high summer with music, food and night walks.

Wine tasting

There is a multitude of wine ‘domaines’ to visit in this region, close by in Margueron and Duras, all around Bergerac to the east and of course in Saint-Emilion and the Bordeaux vineyards to the west. The 'Maison des Vins' at the entrance to Duras is a good place to start, as well as the Chateau La Grave Béchade (25min walk from the house).

Medieval bastide towns

Nearby Pellegrue is a bastide, and others in striking distance of the property and well worth a visit are Monségur, Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, Blasimon, Sauveterre-de-Guyenne and Libourne. Typical features are a grid pattern of streets circling a central square, arched arcades and a covered marketplace, and encircling walls with gateways.

Jardin de Boissonna

The 'Jardin de Boissonna' is a 5min drive (or 30 min walk) from Villa des Colombes.  Classed as a 'Jardin Remarquable', it is a garden dedicated the most English of all flowers, the rose.  You will find over 460 varieties, intertwined with trees, shrubs and perennials.  Breathe in the perfume, enjoy the colour, and simply relax.

Canoeing and kayaking

This can be done nearby at Ste Foy la Grande, or further east around the very well-known and incredibly scenic section of the Dordogne around La Roque Gageac, Beynac and Domne. Paddle downstream and get brought back to your starting point by minibus.

Battle re-enactment at Castillon-la-Bataille

Over several weekends in July and August, the town of Castillon-la-Bataille attracts visitors for its annual festival, recreating a medieval village with demonstrations, games for children, crafts, and food and local wines. In the evening, there is a spectacular re-enactment of the Battle of Castillon, which took place on 17th July 1453 and ended the Hundred Years War. Hundreds of volunteers in costume present a comprehensive retelling of the dramatic battle the town is named after.

A spa day

For some pampering and relaxation, visit Les Bains de Casteljaloux (50km) where you will find thermal spas, massages, Japanese baths, and both indoor & outdoor pools.  The famous spa hotel 'Les Sources de Caudalie', is about 1hr away (direction Bordeaux) - advisable to book in advance.

Do not miss the famous wine town of Saint-Emilion

It is the first wine growing area listed by UNESCO so it is definitely worth a visit. There is also a huge monolithic church carved out of limestone rock, as well as miles of underground tunnels and caves.

Glorious Bordeaux

This bustling metropolitan city has plenty to see and do, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site with some wonderful architecture and impressive squares, several excellent museums, great shopping and gastronomy - and wine of course! Visit ‘La Cité du Vin’ for detailed information about wine routes in the area and to book tastings.

Explore the Dropt Valley

Go for a drive along the Dropt Valley, starting at Duras, through Allemans du Dropt, Lauzun and finishing in Villeréal. Or visit each town on a different day – there is plenty to see and do in each one. In Allemans du Dropt, visit the church to see the 15th century frescos – they depict lively devils and gruesome goings-on!

The famous golf course of Château des Vigiers

... is not too far away, about 22km. Keen golfers can tackle the some or all of the 27 holes, whilst others may prefer the on-site spa, and afterwards all can enjoy a gastronomic meal at the restaurant or a simpler bite in the brasserie.

The coast

It is about a two hour drive to the 19th century seaside resorts of Arcachon or Lacanau, where you will have the choice of the ocean beaches, where the Atlantic rollers are great for surf sports, or the more sheltered beaches of the lakes and lagoons set just inland, or thirdly the tidal beaches of the Bay of Arcachon.
