Great Things to Do Near Villa Marie
Pilat Dune
A sight worth seeing – at 110 metres high and 3km in length, Le Dune du Pilat is Europe’s highest sand dune. There are 160 steps to reach the top but worth it for the far reaching views from all sides.
The famous wine town of Saint-Emilion
is about a 45 minute drive away and definitely worth a visit. It is the first wine growing area listed by UNESCO, with plenty of opportunity to learn about viticulture and of course to sample the product. The historic centre itself is attractive and there is also a huge monolithic church carved out of limestone rock, as well as miles of underground tunnels and caves to explore.
Oysters in Arcachon
The town of Arcachon is famous for osticulture (oyster farming) so if you like oysters, it is the place to visit. But the oysters are not the only reason to go: it is a beautiful place, on the Bassin d’Arcachon, with 19th Century villas and architecture, a beachfront promenade, sandy beaches and great restaurants – enjoy a glass of chilled wine, a plate of oysters and a sea view!
Les Sources de Caudalie
is the nearby spa hotel, a 3 minute drive or a 20 minute walk away. This beautiful 5 star hotel is famous for its spa, where the surrounding vines and by products are used in the treatments. It is also home to three restaurants, offering fine dining, a more informal bistro and a wine bar.
Château Smith Haut Lafitte
A beautiful building with a long history, surrounded by rows and rows of vines, and a 20 minute walk from Villa Marie. The wine domaine organises tastings and some workshops, which need to be booked in advance. A wonderful opportunity to discover more about its wines, the production and history.
Adventure Park in the trees
Arbour-et-Sens is an forest adventure park, about a 30 minute drive away. Open everyday in July and August, and weekends in May, June, September. Seven hectares of forest are home to a variety of courses amongst the trees, both high up and low down, with sections suitable for different age groups (from 4yrs+).
Bordeaux
Bordeaux needs no introduction! Catch the train from Cadaujac and you will be in the centre of this beautiful city before you know it. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the city has some wonderful architecture and impressive squares, several excellent museums, great shopping and gastronomy - and wine of course! Visit ‘La Cité du Vin’ for detailed information about wine routes in the area and to book tastings.
Château de la Brède
This fortress-like château dates back to the 14th Century and was home to the French writer and philosopher Montesquieu. The imposing structure is surrounded by a moat and lake, all within a large estate of gardens and woodland. It is open to the public, who can visit the interior of the château, the parkland and the farm.
Vineyards and Châteaux
You are spoilt for choice when it comes to local vineyards and chateaux. Within a 5km radius of Villa Marie, there is a lovely selection of wine domaines, each with their own beautiful manor house/chateau. Wine tastings are available to book at all of them (best to book in advance). Look out for the Chateaux Bouscaut, Bardins, Carbonnieux, La Louviere, Haut Bailly, Larrivet Haut-Brion.
Make a splash!
Take your youngsters (and the young at heart) to Aqualand at Arcachon, to splash about in the pools, water slides and chutes.
Bird watching at Le Teich
Le Teich bird sanctuary is a 120 hectare reserve on the edge of the Bay of Arcachon, where 260 species stop each year between migrations. You can take a 2.5km or a 6km route through the reserve to discover the diverse flora and fauna attracted by the unusual habitat of sand, salt meadows and pine forests.
Grand Crus Weekend
This weekend in June is an opportunity for wine enthusiasts to sample more than 100 of the great wines of Bordeaux and chat to vintners and wine experts.
A day at the beach
There are plenty to choose from, both along the Atlantic Coast and around the Bay of Arcachon. The closest beaches are the ones around Arcachon and offer something for everyone: access to cafes and restaurants, watersports, views to the Dune du Pilat, or quieter areas backed by trees. For surfing and vast expanses of sand, head to the ones on the Atlantic Coast.
